Tonight on How to Get Away With Murder season 1, episode 11, “Best Christmas Ever,” the gang returns from break to more drama than they bargained for!
This week’s episode of How to Get Away With Murder opens up at the Hamrick Hotel in Philadelphia where Annalise appears to be holed up in over Christmas break. She’s just been drinking, eating and taking pills all while appearing to be in a deep depression that only gets worse as the days go by.
She arrives back home to find Hannah Keating waiting for her at the house. Considering how Annalise reacted to hearing about Hannah arriving, the two women are surprisingly cordial to one another. They begin to talk about Sam and Hannah keeps insisting that the man she knew, her brother, would never have strangled a girl to death. Annalise just hands her over the files of evidence against Sam and tells her to read them and she’ll believe her.
It’s the first class back after Christmas break and the gang is reunited in the second semester of Annalise’s class. Laurel hugs Wes in a strange act of affection while Michaela is all business and tries to conceal any weirdness between them. Leave it to Connor to kill the awkward vibes by telling them all that Sam’s sister showed up at the police station. Wes was a little taken aback that he wasn’t aware of this.
After Wes confronts Annalise about Sam’s sister, a new case arrives at her doorstep. A woman named Jackie shows up and tells Annalise she wants to turn her husband in for holding two girls captive in their basement. Apparently one of the women is pregnant and is about to have the baby. Immediately Annalise wants to go for a plea deal with the police, but the judge needs to hear from the victims before any decision can be made.
After court, Annalise heads to Nate’s place, but before she goes in, she has to deal with Hannah, who has been following her. Annalise tell her she was right all along: yes, she was having an affair with another man. Once inside, Nate tells Annalise he told his wife about her and she gave them her blessing.
Over at Oliver’s apartment, Connor gives Oliver a Christmas present — a re-gifted hat made by his grandmother — but Oliver is skeptical. He doesn’t think Wes is getting help for his drug problem and that scares him. But he’s still willing to watch corny movies with him.
After Connor leaves Oliver’s apartment, he finds that his car was stolen. Laurel assumes Frank took the car and had it destroyed so there will no longer be any evidence. She also notices he’s been spending a lot of time with Asher so he can keep him from snooping around and getting suspicious.
Frank has been quite the henchman this episode and it may just be our favorite version of him yet.
Checking in with Wes and Rebecca, we find out that Wes has been having nightmares. We can tell he is beginning to empathize with Rudy, the guy who used to live in his apartment. Well, he’s at least empathizing with the claw marks on the wall. This whole murder thing is taking its toll on the poor guy and we don’t see this ending very well for him.
The next day at the police station the girls are being questioned and they both seem to think Jackie was a nice enough lady. She would even bring them milk and cookies before her husband came down to see them at night because it would help them go to sleep. AKA she was drugging them so they didn’t have to go through the pain of remembering being raped.
Wes keeps going over the recording of Jackie’s confession and he finds out that Lynn’s first baby never died but Jackie actually kept it for herself. Annalise goes to talk to her to find out where the baby is but Jackie wants the plea deal first. Annalise is able to pull through for Jackie and the police are able to go out and rescue the little girl.
The night outside of Annalise’s house, Laurel tries to get the others to talk about their breaks and how they have been dealing with the aftermath. She admits to missing them after a terrible time at home and Wes tells them about his nightmares. Connor is against the whole group therapy process and is still bitter about Laurel selling him and Michaela out to Annalise. They are in the midst of arguing when Hannah shows up on the doorstep. She heads inside and tells Bonnie she read through all of the evidence but still can’t believe that Sam is the killer. She knows Annalise is hiding something.
It’s finally time for Annalise to deal with her, so she cooks dinner for Hannah and lets Hannah ask her any questions she wants. She reveals the truths about Nate and finding the pictures of Sam on Lila’s phone. She also tells her that she helped Sam out for as long as she could but now he is gone for good.
The episode ends with Wes coming back to his apartment in a relatively chipper mood. However, he’s brought right back down when Rebecca shows him the breaking news about Sam’s body being found in landfill.
