A Funko employee might’ve let slip that a new character who first appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens may be heading to the next spinoff.
CinemaBlend picked up on a recent interview with a Funko employee on the Steele Wars podcast, and the person named Mark teases specific actors appearing in the Han Solo line-up of Funko Pop! Vinyls. But one of the cast members he names stands out amongst the rest:
“Emilia Clarke, Lupita Nyong’o, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, whether I like Han Solo or not that’s a cast that you really cannot, you know, you’ve got to be excited about that casting alone,” they said.
As far as we know, Lupita Nyong’o only plays Maz in the Star Wars saga. Either this employee let a little secret slip or it was a mistake. (Though how could you confuse Lupita’s role in The Force Awakens with one in an upcoming standalone movie? Seems unlikely if you’re a Star Wars follower.)
It’s certainly possible that Funko already knows the key characters in the Han Solo movie, due out next summer, because toys are planned far in advance.
Maz making an appearance in the still-untitled Star Wars spinoff following Han would definitely make sense. Their scenes in The Force Awakens indicate that they have some sort of history together. Maz even knows Chewbacca, who she inquires about when she runs into Han. (Fun fact: In a Star Wars video game titled Commander, Maz refers to Chewie as her “boyfriend.”)
An appearance from Maz could be a nice way to connect the Han Solo prequel with the current trilogy. Maz is expected to be involved in this December’s The Last Jedi. How do we know? Director Rian Johnson shared the following photo on Tumblr last year:
