James Gunn thinks that one day The Avengers will work together with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Speaking to Yahoo! UK to promote this weekend’s release of the Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana-led Guardians, Gunn openly discussed the possibility of a crossover featuring Marvel’s two greatest super hero teams.
“I think there’s going to be huge fans of the Guardians and there are huge fans of the Avengers and I think the discussion has already been had [at Marvel]. I think the audience may demand something like that,” he said.
Gunn appears to know how the teams could cross paths. “We talked about all sorts of possibilities [for a crossover] and I kind of know what the basic plan is. It could always change at any minute.”
Right now his idea seemingly calls for “a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they’re pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other.”
Yahoo! UK also spoke to the stars of Guardians of the Galaxy, and at least one of them was weary of what so many characters on screen could do to one movie. “It’s a delicate balance,” says Pratt, who plays Star-Lord. “If you go from five characters and you add another five characters, that’s ten characters. That can be very difficult.”
Saldana, who plays Gamora, has an idea of how they could work together. “It would be awesome for the Avengers to seek help… professional help from the Guardians.”
Co-star Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer, thinks that his character and Hulk would “clash.”
Gunn is already set to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for a release in July 2017. With Marvel already committed to an Avengers 3, perhaps there’s room for appearances in one or both of these upcoming movies in the years ahead.
A crossover announcement would be the type of revelation that could blow the roof off Marvel’s annual panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Warner Bros. made a similar move last year when they announced Batman v. Superman.
The Avengers 2 directed by Joss Whedon hits theaters next summer. Guardians is in theaters now.
