On Grey’s Anatomy season 13, episode 4, “Falling Slowly,” Meredith tried to push Riggs further away after working together on a case went terribly wrong.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 4 recap:
Alex is trying to lead an example as a good citizen and work hard at the clinic. However, his new boss isn’t a fan. Even though Alex turns up early for work to get everything prepped, he’s not given permission to leave early for an appointment. His lawyers are calling it a make or break situation, though. To make matters even worse, Alex isn’t even allowed to do a simple procedure at the clinic because it requires a scalpel.
When a regular patient comes in looking for an IV treatment, Alex is told to just do it and get her out of there. He’s not satisfied with that, though, and wants to help her. He gives her some tough love and then sends in Weber to give her a pep talk about alcoholism. Things get weird when Weber tries to stop her from leaving and her arm pops out of its socket.
This only gives Alex’s new boss even more reason to yell at him. When Jo comes down for a surgery consult and gives him a hard time, it pushes Alex over the edge. He has a mini meltdown and storms out of the clinic to go see his lawyers, but he turns back when he realizes what the patient actually has.
It’s not clear where Alex stands with his court case. His lawyers are trying to make a case for his good character, and even though he proves it again by caring more about his patient than himself it may not be enough. Alex may never be able to get rid of that anger inside of him.
The Maggie/Riggs/Meredith drama is still on even though Riggs thinks it’s already passed. He even tries to convince Meredith that they should go to the movies together — until Meredith shuts him down and says that they’re not that type of friends. Maggie, meanwhile, seems to be avoiding Riggs because she’s not over her obsession with him.
Meredith even gets annoyed with Riggs when he says they’re a good team. After disagreeing with Owen, he backs up her call to wait on surgery. Meredith doesn’t need his validation, though. She’s adamant it’s the right decision. However, when she goes to check on the patient later, it’s clear that Meredith didn’t make the right choice after all.
Owen is rightfully pissed off at the two of them for making him wait on the surgery. His anger turns up another notch when they learn that the patient is now paralyzed from the waist down. Meredith worries that Riggs might have sided with her from the start because he has feelings for her. That makes Riggs mad at Meredith, too. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him shout at someone like that!
Meredith might be more like Maggie than she cares to admit, and seems to be doing some obsessing of her own. She’s worried that instead of worrying about her patients, she’s going to keep thinking about Riggs’ feelings. She offers to keep their relationship more professional, but Riggs doesn’t buy it. Before they can come to some kind of agreement, Maggie interrupts them.
Meanwhile, Owen is also dealing with Amelia freaking out. After learning that Owen goes to church, Amelia starts thinking that they got married too soon and that they don’t know enough about each other. She even quizzes him about herself and compares it to what she knows about him. Owen even vents to Meredith that once Amelia latches on to a thought she just can’t let it go.
It becomes clear, though, that Amelia is more worried that what Owen doesn’t know about her he won’t like. She has a dark past that’s hard to open up about and now that they’re married it’s hard to keep it a secret. When Amelia does open up about a former love overdosing in front of her, he admits to once choking Cristina while he was suffering from PTSD.
The talk brings them so much closer together that they seem to decide to start trying for a baby! It’s quite a jump to go from worrying about getting married too soon to then taking another big step, but that’s what these two do, apparently. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take a bad turn.
Jackson and April are still struggling to get their roles down. They’re still trying to navigate what it means to be living together and trying to raise their daughter. Mix that in with being overtired from all-nighters with the baby and they start to get a bit annoyed with one another but don’t want to talk to it.
At a checkup with Arizona, April is given the all clear to lift heavy objects again and get back to work. This also means she could move out of Jackson’s apartment and be on her own again, which Arizona advises. Jackson agrees that the situation is weird when they talk about it later, but he doesn’t want her to move out and she doesn’t either.
These two are in a unique situation right now. They were barely friends before and now they’re raising their daughter together like a family. It’s going to be easy for their feelings to grow into something more, but they’ll have to be careful not to fall back into old habits. It’s a good sign that they’re able to talk about what’s been bothering them and work through it.
