Actresses Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens are the first two stars to join Fox’s upcoming live production of Grease.
Hough will play the “angelic” Sandy and Hudgens will play bad-girl Rizzo in Grease: Live (the working title) which is slated to air January 31, 2016.
Both actresses spoke about their roles in a press release. For Hough, it sounds like playing Sandy is a literal dream come true.
“Grease is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer, and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy,” she said. “My siblings and I watched it and played it out over and over when we were kids. This is my dream role and performing it live on television will be one of the most thrilling opportunities I’ve had in my career so far.”
Unlike Hough, Hudgens never dreamed of starring in Grease, but she’s happy to do it. “Being Rizzo is something I’ve never imagined, and I love that because it will be a new challenge,” she said. “She is such an iconic character that continues to transcend generations. I cannot wait to bring her to life on live television. I’m going to be a Pink Lady!”
In the same announcement Fox revealed that Marc Platt, who has produced films like Legally Blonde and Into the Woods, will produce the musical for the network.
Grease: Live comes on the heels of NBC’s two live musicals The Sound of Music Live and Peter Pan Live which performed well for the network (the former did much better than the latter).
