It’s all about the New York City crew in Glee season 5, episode 13, “New New York.” Check out our recap as well as the promo for next week’s very intense and emotional episode.
Apparently we skipped the whole summer and have landed in the colder part of the fall semester. A close assessment of the leaves on the trees reflects that they are definitely somewhere in winter, presumably at the end of 2013. But knowing Glee’s space-time continuum, we could be flashing sideways Lost-style for all we know.
One of the producers of Funny Girl provides Rachel with a 24/7 car service. He asks her where she’d like to go. She performs “Downtown” with Kurt, Blaine, Artie, and Sam. Kurt waves with a sort of “WTF” look saying “unbelievable” as Rachel explains the car situation.
Later, a boxers-and-tank-top-only Blaine cooks Kurt breakfast in bed at their apartment. Over breakfast Blaine reminisces over how awesome it is that they get to live together before he sings “You Make Me Feel So Young.” Sam has been living there “for months” according to Kurt, who isn’t thrilled with the invasion of privacy. At this point it’s clear that Kurt and Blaine living together isn’t working out for the relationship.
Artie is getting used to his life as a handicapable NYC resident before he gets his backpack stolen in the subway from a man with crutches.
Blaine confronts Sam, who has been playing video games for several hours at a time, saying he has noticed Sam having a hard time dealing with his current situation in NYC. Blaine gives Sam a pep talk before Sam freaks out about being overwhelmed by New York City. Blaine forces Sam to get out and see the city as they sing “Best Day of My Life” in Times Square.
At NYADA, Kurt and freshman Blaine are taking a mime class together, which may be symbolic to Blaine’s trajectory of life following Kurt to New York City and NYADA. Blaine explains that he got special permission to be in six out of eight of Kurt’s classes. Kurt, clearly overwhelmed by his overdose of Blaine, asks how that can even happen. “Have you asked Sam to move out yet? We haven’t had a moment to ourselves,” says Kurt. In this moment it’s clear Blaine is making up for lost time during their long distance relationship.
Sam finally listens to all of us screaming at our TVs since September and gets his hair chopped off. He finally looks like the male model he was trying to be. “Here I come New York City,” he says after sporting his new ‘do.
Kurt vents to Elliott (a.k.a. Starchild) about Blaine buying a couch infested with bed bugs, and about him being suffocated by Blaine around the clock. Elliott says, “Everyone needs some time alone,” as he performs “Rockstar” with Kurt.
Rachel has an internal struggle about being isolated from New York City by riding around in a private car. Sam booked his first modeling job with a company that makes underwear with built-in butt pads because of course that’s what Sam would be modeling. He also tells Blaine that he’s moving out of their apartment and into model housing (which is a real thing, by the way).
Blaine and Kurt get into a huge fight and Kurt calls Blaine a psycho for moving things around in their apartment. Kurt confesses he had been talking to Elliott about their relationship, to which Blaine responds with “I bet you were.” There was a troubled vibe of speculation in Blaine’s tone that will surely have Klaine fans talking after watching the episode.
Blaine shows up to Elliott’s apartment and demands that he confess he’s after Kurt. Blaine basically freaks out, and gets a lot more aggressive than we’ve ever seen. Elliott calms Blaine down and helps him realize people need room to breathe. They end up jamming out to “Glitter Rock Vampire,” an insult-turned-song from Blaine.
Rachel meets Artie and suggests that they take the subway together because she wants to live more in the world after she mentions that she gave up the town car. They make up and perform “Don’t Sleep In the Subway” with dancers on a very clean 4 train on the east side of Manhattan. In fact, it’s the cleanest subway car and platform you’ll ever see in New York City.
Sam eventually moves into a model dorm and has a beautiful female roommate also named Sam. After having a huge blowout, Blaine admits that he thinks he should move out of their apartment. “It’s not working out,” he says about their living situation. Despite the solemn vibe of the conversation, it’s clear that this is the best possible solution for the troubles these two are experiencing.
Meanwhile on the L train to Bushwick, Artie pepper sprays his mugger and gets his laptop back. Back at Kurt and Rachel’s, everyone’s filling everyone in on the dramatic recent events, when out of nowhere Mercedes shows up to “take over New York,” and apparently has moved here full time. She is going to rent her other bedroom in her apartment out to Blaine and Sam.
Rachel finishes the episode singing “People” from Funny Girl while she appreciates all the positivity that is happening in her life.
In a promo for next week’s episode, titled “Bash,” it’s clear that Kurt is involved with a hate crime as Rachel sings music from “Into The Woods.”
