Admitting defeat is not the end of the road. Find out who calls it quits on tonight’s Girls season 4, episode 4, “Cubbies.”
What seems like the right fit may require some alterations along the way. Shoshanna, Hannah, and Desi tailor their lives to how they are comfortable.
Shoshanna wraps up an unsuccessful interview and asks the right concluding question, but her approach lacks decorum. Though she says she is prepared for the worst, the interviewer dishes Shosh a taste of her own brutally honest candor. It seems that Shoshanna is better presented on paper than in person.
One person who is finding it hard to present herself on paper is Hannah. A few weeks into Iowa and Elijah seems to be the only one getting any work done. Hannah relies heavily on her own experiences to open the floodgate of her creative side, but when the biggest thing to happen is caving into buying a box of Thin Mints, the future looks a little bleak. That is until she unleashes her words on her classmates.
The Grammys are happening down at the stations tonight, but Marnie is starting her own musical campaign after her first single nears completion. She pesters Shosh and Jessa to provide feedback. Jessa could not care less and Shoshanna hails it as the perfect song that you love after the radio plagues your ears with it on endless repeat until you love it.
Shoshanna laments that she has been on seven interviews in two weeks… wait a minute. HER SEVENTH INTERVIEW IN TWO WEEKS?! The writing team has clearly not spoken to anyone ages 18-21 years old or been in the job market for quite some time.
Hannah violates the sacred space of the cubbies to share a letter that serves as a way to pass the blame onto her classmates for her own shortcomings as a writer. Most of her time in Iowa has been spent defending herself rather than taking the time to create and use the feedback. Academia does not fit Hannah, and she learns it does not have to.
Iowa is a specific place for a very specific writer. As her teacher points out, everyone there is an adult and can make their own choices. What will make Hannah happy? The thought of getting kicked out was the first spark of joy she felt since she arrived.
Ray and Shoshanna try to shed some of their older clothes as they spend an afternoon together literally shopping for new clothes. But despite the outfits Shoshanna tries to put on, they do not take away from the comfort Ray has in his angrier poly-cotton blends. Shosh recognizes her shortcomings as a girlfriend and takes her forceful nature to push Ray in a new political direction.
Marnie may not be making sweet music with Desi, but she is now the only lady in his life. Will having an emotionally raw Desi all to herself finally make her happy?
Parents are great at talking their kids into what they really want. Sometimes quitting is the hardest and best thing for someone to do. Take off the backpack and head back to the place you call home, New York. Forget everyone else and what they think, when Hannah refocuses to the future, all those opinions will fade into the black. All save one.
When she arrives to what she thinks is home, she is greeted by Mimi Rose and a newly furbished apartment. Adam has some explaining to do.
