Netflix dropped a trailer for its new series, Sex Education, a show about a teen sex therapist starring Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield.
Netflix has released its fair share of shows and original movies that made fans scratch their heads prior to watching. However, the premise of their latest series, Sex Education, has really got people talking.
The series stars Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield, and centers on Butterfield’s character, Otis. The series follows Otis and his friend when they team up with Otis’ mother (Gillian Anderson) who is a sex therapist to start a health clinic for their high school classmates.
So basically, it’s a show about a young virgin who becomes a teen sex therapist. However, while the initial gimmick might not grab you, this show seems to have a bit more than meets the eye.
Netflix released a trailer for Sex Education, and it looks like the series will be a fun depiction of teenage life and the awkwardness of trying to find yourself during your high school years. Plus, we’re always on board for just about anything with Gillian Anderson.
While this series is getting a lot of press by touting the phrase “teenage sex therapist” around, the heart of the show seems to be way past the gimmick of making Butterfield’s character a sort of Doogie Howser of sex therapy. Instead, the trailer shows us that Netflix’s new series is trying to be a heartfelt show that not only attempts to highlight the way we all really think about sex, our bodies, and sexuality. It’s trying a sex-positive show that (hopefully) will not only make us laugh, but may also help normalize the occasionally awkward conversations about sexuality and sexual health.
Sex Education looks to be a series with a gimmick with so much more depth than initially meets the eye. However, we’ll have to watch the series itself to see if the show is able to walk that line between being a teen comedy and managing to talk about real issues in an engaging, fresh way. We can’t wait to find out, and will be ready when the series hits Netflix on January 11.
