Speaking to USA Today in support of his new animated feature film Strange Magic, Star Wars creator George Lucas unveiled a couple interesting details about his pre-Disney plans for Episode VII.
Despite going back and forth over the years about whether or not to continue the Star Wars film series after the second trilogy, Lucas confirmed this week that he started to develop the seventh installment before Disney came along with an offer to buy Lucasfilm.
Lucas explained that he wanted to release Star Wars: Episode VII in May of this year, then sell Lucasfilm after its release so someone else could create the remaining two films in the new trilogy.
One of the things that stopped him from taking on an entire new trilogy himself is that it would’ve been a 10-year commitment.
“It’s better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself,” he said to USA Today. “The time is more important to me than the money.”
As for any Star Wars regrets? “The only thing I really regret about Star Wars is the fact I never got to see it — I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen,” he said. “The next one, I’ll be able to enjoy it like anybody else.”
His intention to release Episode VII in the summer – like every other Star Wars film – is interesting, because we know director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy were hoping for a summer 2016 after they realized they couldn’t make summer 2015. Disney refused, but agreed to move it to December 2015.
