Watch HBO’s Inside the Episode video for Game of Thrones‘ second episode of season 3, “Dark Wings, Dark Words.”
In the video, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss rehash the episode, and explain some of the major developments:
Benioff explains why Robb Stark’s men are beginning to question his King In the North potential now that he no longer has Winterfell, saying, “If you can’t even protect your own home, why would we risk our lives fighting for you, if the Starks clearly isn’t a name that’s feared much anymore.”
In this episode, Catelyn’s arc takes a dark turn after she learns of Bran and Rickon’s presumed deaths. Weiss compares her to Cersei, saying that, “her love for her family is a love for her actual family, as opposed to a love for the family honour.”
Benioff adds that there’s a lot of self-blame on Cat’s part, because she feels responsible for all the terrible things that have happened.
“A lot of people think she provoked the war between the Lannisters and the Starks by arresting Tyrion,” Benioff says, “and on a primal level she left home and she left her children, and now she knows she’s never gonna see them again.”
Then there’s poor Theon Greyjoy being tortured, breaking in what Weiss calls a very realistic way: “He tells them the truth, and then he tells them lies, he says whatever it takes to make the pain that he’s feeling stop.”
His torturers aren’t telling him who they are or what information they’re after, but don’t feel too bad for him – at least Weiss doesn’t seem to, explaining that although we don’t yet know why this is happening, “the torture is obviously a direct repercussion of many of the horrible things he’s done.”
Finally, the Hound recognises Arya, and the showrunners explain that this now makes her a pawn in the game, and puts her in even greater danger than before. “I just think she wants to get out of the situation as quickly as possible,” Weiss says.
“The great tragedy for her is that she’s so close,” Benioff says, “she’s so close to Catelyn and Robb, and if she could only get there, things would be okay.”
