Four new featurettes take fans behind the intricate scenes of Game of Thrones season 4.
It’s no secret that production on HBO’s popular fantasy series is one of the most detailed and comprehensive on television today. But four new behind-the-scenes videos from Game of Thrones season 4 display the breadth and depth of what it really takes to make this epic series.
The first video, titled “Directing Season 4,” introduces the men and women who will be sitting in the director’s chair this season.
The directors – Alex Graves, Michelle Maclaren, Alik Sakharov, and Neil Marshall – all express appreciation for the magnitude of the project. Graves called working on Game of Thrones season 4 “a director’s dream,” and Neil Marshal agreed, saying that he was “over the moon” when asked to return.
The second video, “Preparing the Wedding Feast,” discusses the intense preparation for the feast celebrating Joffery and Margaery’s wedding.
The scene — only the latter half of the actual wedding — featured an enormous set full of moving extras. A major focus was the food; Karen Booth, the show’s “home economist,” was inspired by the books in designing the opulent fare at Westeros’ wedding of the century. The scene took five days to shoot, but actress Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell) called the experience “a celebration for the senses.”
The next featurette focuses on costume designer Michelle Clapton and her work on Game of Thrones season 4.
Clapton discusses the many elements of her costuming, including the royal wedding (“Distasteful in a way,” she said), Brienne’s new armor, and Jaime’s “beautiful” new golden hand. Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) expressed his appreciation for the intricate costume. “[Oberyn is] a pimp!” Pascal laughed, noting his character’s penchant for jewelry.
Finally, a video on “Weapons and Training” was released, taking a look at… well, the weapons and training.
The battles to come in Game of Thrones season 4 span vast distances — from beyond the Wall, to Castle Black, to King’s Landing and Meereen — but the preparation and care taken seems to be the same, no matter the setting.
Game of Thrones season 4, episode 1, “Two Swords,” will air on Sunday, April 6 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
