Game of Thrones star Ciaran Hinds (Mance Rayder) shares his theories about the show, compares it to Harry Potter, and talks about book characters that have been cut.
Ciaran Hinds has spoken to Vulture about the new season, where he stars as the King Beyond the Wall.
In the interview he admits he hasn’t yet read the books, but has definitely picked up on the excitement surrounding the series.
“I always wonder about the people who read the books, how annoyed they might be, either by casting, or, ‘That’s not how we imagined it,’ because they feel ownership of it,” he says. “You get announced as Mance Rayder, and what if the vox populi goes, ‘Boo’? You know? They might take an ax to him.”
He also shares a light spoiler about how much we can expect to see Mance this year, saying, “Jon leaves him to go on to the Wall, and Mance isn’t in it for the rest of the series, except for a shot with them coming back without Jon Snow. The economy of that is just with one look, he knows it’s all gone wrong: ‘You fucked up, didn’t you?’ That’s all I know.”
Maybe this is why we haven’t yet met Mance’s wife Dalla, who along with her sister Val are fairly important characters in the book series. Hinds says in this interview that he hasn’t filmed any scenes with a character bearing that name, which makes us worry that her arc – and the series of events it sets off – might have been cut completely or drastically altered.
Although of course there is always season 4. Hinds definitely implies that he’ll be returning when he shares this fun Jon Snow theory: “The next time I have a scene with Kit [Harington], I can say, “Do you know where you come from?” And if he says, “Father … ” That’s a bluff.”
Like many other fans, the mystery of Jon’s parentage has intrigued Hinds. And he gives a nice little shoutout to his stint as Aberforth Dumbledore, saying, “Maybe he’s like Harry Potter, the Chosen One, and yet nobody actually knows.”
Game of Thrones returns next Sunday with 3×03 “Walk of Punishment,” which airs at 9/8c on HBO.
