‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ extended cut deleted scenes list
Some of the Crimes of Grindelwald’s deleted scenes depict very interesting moments that are sure to spark some discussion amongst fans (and Harry Potter podcasts).
All told, there’s 14 minutes of deleted scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. Below is a scene-by-scene breakdown. To see them for yourself, grab Crimes of Grindelwald on iTunes and other outlets, or grab the physical version next month. Both the digital and physical editions include the Extended Cut of the film, which re-adds several of these deleted scenes.
As we wait for Fantastic Beasts Movie 3, enjoy these additional bits of the Wizarding World from J.K. Rowling.
- “Credence Reborn”: An entirely new opening. The Warner Brothers logo transitions to a white cloak sinking in the water, and then to a piece of ash that Credence “escaped” in at the end of the first Fantastic Beasts movie. Notably, after Credence Barebone / Aurelius Dumbledore is “reborn,” he discovers his adoption papers, leading him to scream. This is in contrast to what ended up being the opening in the final cut: Grindelwald’s escape from prison. Presumably the escape would’ve directly followed this “Credence Reborn” opening.
- “At The Docks”: Credence spots Circus Arcanus boarding a boat heading for Europe. After a stare between him and the circus operator Skender, Credence is let in. It’s not clear if there was a discussion between the two, or why Credence wanted to join them.
- “Walk n Talk”: In one of the more important deleted scenes, Dumbledore is walking with Newt during their first encounter in the movie when they have this conversation:
Newt: So why did you send me to New York?
Dumbledore: Because I knew Grindelwald would try to catch Credence. He had a vision, you see, many years ago, in which an Obscurial killed the man he fears above all others.
Newt: You.
Dumbledore: I thought you might deprive Grindelwald of his weapon, not by killing Credence but by saving him.
One wonders if Grindelwald contemplated this Obscurial being Ariana Dumbledore. You also have to wonder when exactly Grindelwald had this vision.
- “Ballroom Dance”: Another important scene. Leta and Theseus are attending a formal event, and there are murmurs amongst the crowd that Leta’s brother is alive. “The rumors are true,” one says. “Her brother is alive,” says another. One man recites the prophecy:
“‘Return great avenger, with wings from the water.’ Congratulations, Leta, your brother lives. We all truly believe it.”
Leta watches a dancer make white objects — visually similar to the Obscurial — swirl through the air. One falls slowly in the air, recalling a visual similar to the above opening in which a cloak falls through the water. You might remember that this visual again appears in the final cut of the movie when Leta is doing her info dump.
- “Tina and Skender”: Tina comes to Circus Arcanus in search of Credence and has a brief, inconsequential chat with Skender.
- “Newt’s Basement”: There’s an extended scene at Newt’s workshop in which he tells Jacob they’re heading for Paris. We see Newt has fixed up his suitcase so that no beasts get out “without my say so.” He also has some new interactions with the beloved Nifflers. To get one in the suitcase, he Accios a necklace as bait.
- “Murmuration”: In a scene that partially appeared in one of the film’s trailers, Credence and Nagini are sleeping and CUDDLED UP on a roof top. He wakes up and watches a mother and newborn walking down the street. Nagini joins him at his perch and she rests her head on his shoulder, then encourages Credence to let out his “curse.” “We’re free,” she tells him, a reference to escaping the circus. Nagini admires the smoke monster moving gracefully through the air.
- “Newt and Jacob Walk to Kama’s”: A scene in which Newt and Jacob walk with Yusuf Kama. Completely inconsequential.
- “Nagini and Credence in Alley”: A scene in which Nagini and Credence are in an alley scavenging for bread. Sitting down, Credence grabs Nagini’s hand and gently caresses it.
- “Dumbledore and McGonagall”: The final scene finds Dumbledore at Hogwarts walking through a corridor. The tracker on his wrist is visible and he seems a little troubled. McGonagall finds him:
McGonagall: “There you are, what did Travers want? Absolutely outrageous behavior, marching into a school like that.”
Dumbledore: “It was all very mundane, sorry Minerva a lot of marking [school work],”
She looks on as he heads into his office. Though inconsequential, this scene is somewhat notable for Dumbledore using McGonagall’s first name, which confirms that this IS the one and only Professor McGonagall from the Harry Potter series.
Be sure to watch the Extended Cut of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald featuring all of these deleted scenes beginning today! It’s a great way to pass the time as we wait for Fantastic Beasts 3.
