Just a couple weeks after finding young Dumbledore, Fantastic Beasts 2 has cast an actor to play Newt’s brother Theseus.
Theseus Scamander will be played by Callum Turner, a relatively unknown actor who’s had roles in Green Room, Tramps, and Assassin’s Creed.
What role will Theseus play in Fantastic Beasts 2? Pottermore’s announcement (which is oddly calling his casting a “rumour” despite confirming it themselves) is acting like we only know him for being a war hero, but we actually know much more than that.
As we reported in December, a prop letter on display at the Hollywood WB Studio Tour revealed that Theseus was actually on the hunt for Grindelwald prior to Newt’s accidental run-in with the villain:
“I have been chosen to go away and ferret him out,” Theseus wrote to Newt in the letter. “I don’t know how much you have heard wherever you are about what’s going on in jolly old Europe but this chap Grindelwald has been making a lot of noise since you have been away.”
Presumably the prop was for a scene in Fantastic Beasts 1, and for whatever reason, it was cut. As I speculated in December, Theseus’s involvement in hunting Grindelwald could be a way for J.K. Rowling to get Newt more deeply involved. Perhaps Theseus could be killed by Grindy in a future movie, thereby setting up Newt to avenge his brother’s death as he and Dumbledore take on the evil wizard.
Just wait until Theseus, the Grindelwald hunter, was beaten by his brother at his own assignment!
By the way: A previous interview with Colin Farrell revealed that Theseus is a British auror who corresponded with Graves.
