Hypable has your quintessential fall movie guide for 2013. So, breakout the scarves and pumpkin spiced-everything, and let’s go to the movies!
It’s officially Fall and we are officially excited for the movies set to round out 2013. From Oscar-bait to last minute blockbusters, here are 20 films that have us saying “Summer who?”
1. ‘Gravity’
Now Playing
Stars: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney
The outer space epic has already broken a box-office record bringing in just over $55 million, making it the highest-grossing October opening of all time. The trailer for this film left us speechless (and terrified) and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Hypable’s own Marco Cerritos called it “one of the best and most mentally exhausting films of the year.” Looking ahead to Oscar season, the film is almost a lock for a ‘best cinematography’ statue.
2. ‘Captain Phillips’
Release Date: October 11
Stars: Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks stars as real life commercial cargo ship captain, Richard Phillips, who’s ship is hijacked by Somali Pirates. Captain Phillips must protect his crew and cargo from the unpredictable circumstances. The role is definitely Oscar-bait for Hanks and the film shows signs of being an interesting and enthralling thriller.
3. ‘Romeo & Juliet’
Release Date:October 11
Stars: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglass Booth
The last time we saw Romeo and Juliet on film, they were battling 90’s angst in what resembled modern Los Angeles. This time around, the tale is being laid in fair Verona with traditional costumes and circumstances. This latest adaptation boasts an impressive cast including Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard, Damien Lewis, and lead by Hailee Steinfeld and Douglass Booth.
4. ‘The Fifth Estate’
Release Date:October 11
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch
Here’s the thing about Benedict Cumberbatch -he’s everywhere and we’re not even mad about it. This dramatic-thriller is based on the real events surrounding the WikiLeaks controversy. Cumberbatch plays Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks as he battles some of the most powerful people in the world and even his colleagues over the right/necessity to expose government secrets. The cast includes Daniel Bruhl, Stanley Tucci, and Laura Linney.
5. ’12 Years A Slave’
Release Date:October 18
Stars: Chiwetel Ejifor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alfre Woodard
Like many of the films in the guide, this film screams Oscar-bait, especially for Chiwetel Ejifor in the lead role. Ejifor plays Solomon Northup, a free black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the mid-1800s. The film is based on Northup’s true story of the 12 years he spent separated from his family, living as a slave. Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Palson, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, and (of course) Benedict Cumberbatch round out the incredible cast.
6. ‘The Counselor’
Release Date:October 18
Stars: Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz
Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt fans going through withdrawals won’t have to worry come late October. The Counselor opens one week after 12 Years a Slave. This dangerous thriller follows Fassbender’s lawyer character as he gets mixed up with a drug trafficking ring lead by a crazy-haired Javier Bardem (Seriously, what is it with him and hair?).
7. ‘Ender’s Game’
Release Date:November 1
Stars: Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford
Based on the popular book of the same name, Ender’s Game takes place decades after an alien war, when a young boy (Asa Butterfield) is tasked with saving humanity. The film puts Harrison Ford back in the role of a sci-fi/fantasy hero (where he belongs!) and boasts a cast that includes Viola Davis, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, and Sir Ben Kingsley.
8. ‘Thor:The Dark World’
Release Date:November 8
Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston return as our favorite otherworldly super siblings in yet another epic battle to save (or destroy, in Loki’s case) the world. The follow-up to 2011’s Thor and last year’s The Avengers reunites the epic hero with lady love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Marvel has been a hit machine for the past few years and at this point, you can pretty much count us in for whatever they put out -especially if it involves Loki.
9. ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’
Release Date:November 15 (?)
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio
Regardless of the possible delay of the film’s release date, we can’t wait to see The Wolf of Wall Street. The movie is based on a true story and has an amazing cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Favreau, and Rob Reiner. It’s got Leo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, and a 90’s motif. Say no more.
10. ‘The Book Thief’
Release Date: November 15
Stars: Sophie Nelisse, Geoffrey Rush
Fans of the much beloved novel of the same name are cautiously but excitedly awaiting the release of The Book Thief. The film tells the story of a young girl living in Nazi Germany with who finds comfort in stealing books. Sophie Nelisse stars in the lead role opposite Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson.
