Emily Blunt may be busy promoting her new film, Mary Poppins Returns, but she made sure that fans knew there is a script for her Edge of Tomorrow 2 if the actors can just find the time to film it.
Edge of Tomorrow was arguably one of the best science fiction movies of 2014, but it didn’t perform well initially at the box office. With issues of unclear titling and less-than-stellar marketing efforts, it took a while for fans to find their way to the flick. However, since its summer release, it’s gained a worldwide cult following, and fans were quick to ask if a second installment was in the works.
Though the movie was an initial box office failure, Edge of Tomorrow did manage to turn a profit worldwide, which opened the conversation for a sequel. And from interviews with Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, and director Doug Liman, it sounded like the team was game to make another installment in the franchise. However, as the years passed, it started to seem like a sequel might not happen after all.
In a recent interview with IndieWire during her Mary Poppins Returns promotion, Blunt reignited interest in an Edge of Tomorrow sequel. She not only said that a script existed (though she expects another one is going to be written), but that Cruise and Liman have gone as far as trying to work out scheduling for filming.
The only problem is, both Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise are in pretty high demand these days, so scheduling has proven to be a huge problem. When Cruise initially wanted to film the sequel, Blunt was filming Mary Poppins, and once she was done with that, Cruise was working on Mission Impossible while Blunt shot A Quiet Place.
So does this mean we’ll never get our Edge of Tomorrow sequel? Not necessarily. Blunt is still very hopeful that they can make this sequel work.
As she told IndieWire, “Doug Liman has got an awesome idea and he’s excited and they just need to write it. There has been a script, but now I gather there’s another one in the works.” With the director and lead actors this excited, we really hope the team is able to make their schedules work, and with everyone this passionate about the movie, we’re feeling hopeful that we’ll get another story of Rita and Cage kicking ass and taking names over and over again.
