A sequel to Warner Bros.’ critical sci-fi hit, Edge of Tomorrow, has entered development at the studio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Matthew Robinson has been tasked with producing a script for Warner Bros.. Director Doug Liman, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s involvement in the sequel will hinge on the success of that script, with each remaining open to signing on should they like it.
Robinson is best known for his work on the Ricky Gervais comedy, The Invention of Lying, which he co-directed and co-wrote. He also received a screenwriting credit on the Monster Trucks movie.
The original Edge of Tomorrow movie was based on a Hiroshi Sakurazaka manga called All You Need Is Kill. It centered around Cruise’s character, Major William Cage, after he gets stuck in a time-loop during an alien invasion. Sergeant Rita Vrataski, played by Blunt, was previously caught in a loop herself, and the two team up together to end the invasion and save the world.
Though Edge of Tomorrow wasn’t a huge commercial success for Warner Bros., it has since become something of a cult-hit, and a sequel has been hotly anticipated by its fans since its original release. Now, it appears, those fans might edge closer to getting their wish.
