Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is producing and starring in the Jumanji reboot. But how will he pay homage to Robin Williams?
For many people, the 1995 family film Jumanji is really synonymous with Robin Williams, whose lead character Alan Parrish really defined the story.
In the original movie, Williams’ character is lost inside the board game Jumanji for 25 years. Upon release he’s soon forced to play again, but this time, the creatures from the jungle escape into real life.
Now, Sony is doing a reboot — or ‘re-adaptation’ of Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 children’s picture book — with Dwayne Johnson set to star.
Naturally, fans of the original have concerns about just how this new version will compare to the movie they love so much — and, according to Johnson’s Instagram at least, the actor shares the same concerns.
Johnson says that the remake will be more faithful to the original picture book than the 1995 movie version was.
As for Robin Williams, Johnson says, “An important thing that I want to be honest and bring up is Robin Williams. The love and respect I have for this man is boundless. You have my word, we will honor his name and the character of "Alan Parrish" will stand alone and be forever immortalized in the world of JUMANJI in an earnest and cool way. I have an idea of what to do and I think his family will be proud.”
The Jumanji remake is directed by Jake Kasdan, and will begin production this fall, with Kevin Hart rumored to co-star with Dwayne Johnson. It’s projected for a July 28, 2017 release.
