A darker Doctor, Hitler, River Song… these are just a few of the things that were discussed at the Television Critics Assoc. Press Tour in Beverly Hills earlier today.
During the event Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat announced that fans, “cannot miss” the shows return on August 27th. He revealed that the episode, entitled Let’s Kill Hitler, is “where everything changes”.
Trailers showing clips from the episode, in which Hitler seemingly thanks the Doctor for saving his life, have sparked criticism from some however Moffat was quick to reassure fans that they are not favouring Hitler.
“I think we can unequivocally say we’re against Hitler. I think the worst thing you can do to that awful man is take the mickey out of him on Doctor Who. Don’t worry, we’re not going to save Hitler”
He added the importance of trying to stretch the boundaries to keep the show fresh and suspenseful.
“The only way you can keep the show alive is to make changes. The trouble with a series as it gets older it can feel like a tradition. And tradition is the enemy of suspense. It’s about keeping it lively and suspenseful … The story of the week still takes center stage. What we have is a more extremely version of what we’ve always had. All the stories will end and satisfyingly.”
Speaking about the revelation that River Song is Amy and Rory’s daughter, Moffat also teased, “You think you know the truth about River. You don’t know it yet. There’s loads more to come.” Karen Gillan, who plays Amy, added, “It’s going to take some twists and turns. All of the relationships and the whole dynamic is going to change.”
Mofatt also teases that the Doctor’s past will finally start to catch up with him over the the coming episodes suggesting, “The dark side of a man who could have caused the end of the universe is considerable”
TVLine also report about the possibility of seeing an American version of the show;
Would Moffat ever consider taking Doctor Who abroad to America like his counterparts at Who‘s spinoff Torchwood? “It’s entirely about story,” he replied. “I don’t think in order to make Doctor Who successful in America you have to make stories set in America. … I’d like to do it. I don’t think it’s necessary. But absolutely, we like coming here.”
What do you think? Doctor Who will return to our screens later next month with the episode Let’s Kill Hitler.
