The Doctor Who Christmas Special airs tonight and it will feature an epic meeting of the Twelfth Doctor and River Song.
The Doctor Who Christmas Special has varied over the years. Sometimes it has been used to introduce a new Doctor, such as David Tennant’s arrival as the Tenth Doctor, or to say goodbye to an old one, such as Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. Other times it’s a one-off where the Doctor is travelling between companions, and he meets a new crop of people, or has an adventure with the existing companion. If you want a real trip back in time, check out our 2012 retrospective on the Doctor Who Christmas Specials.
This year the Doctor Who Christmas Special is doing something a bit new in that they are reuniting two cast members. Then again, they haven’t exactly met before. It’s sort of a meeting for the first time reunion/non-reunion. Thanks to wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff, this epic meetup (not to mention the previous sentence) bizarrely makes sense. The Twelfth Doctor has never met River Song before unless you counts his eyebrows popping by in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special.
The last time we saw River Song was back in 2013 during the season 7 finale, “The Name of the Doctor,” and during the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, “The Day of the Doctor.” Technically, she wasn’t alive during both those episodes. It was only an image of River that appeared, as her consciousness was stored in the library from “Forest of the Damned.” The last legitimate, corporeal interaction with River Song was during Amy Pond and Rory Williams’ last episode, “The Angels Take Manhattan.”
This time out, the Doctor Who Christmas Special is entitled, “The Husbands of River Song.” Hope springs eternal that maybe we’ll get a Matt Smith cameo.
According to the BBC official synopsis, “It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.”
The Doctor Who Christmas Special airs on BBC America tonight at 9:00 pm. In addition, if you want to see the Doctor Who Christmas Special on the big screen, you have a limited time opportunity next week when it plays in cinemas.
