The Descendants sequel is officially greenlit at Disney Channel, get ready for the return of all your favorite characters!

Disney Channel is pouncing on the popularity of their hit Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants and has officially ordered the sequel! Disney Channel’s president and chief creative officer Gary Marsh announced today that the movie will begin production this summer for a release in 2017. Marsh said, “Just when you thought ‘Happily Ever After’ had come to the land of Auradon, Descendants 2 turns the page to reveal a whole new level of mystery and surprise.”

The story of the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains will continue with Descendants 2. Director Kenny Ortega will be returning as director, executive producer and choreographer of the sequel. Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon, who won a 2016 Writers Guild Award for Descendants will executive-produce with Wendy Japhe. Costume designer Kara Saun and production designer Mark Hofeling are also set to return. Tony Testa and Shawn Williamson will also work on the choreography team.

Stars Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Mitchell Hope will be returning in their original roles. While China Anne McClain has been added to play the role of the daughter of Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Casting for new characters is expected to begin soon, including for the roles of the children of villains Captain Hook and Gaston.

As fans of the original, we’re excited to see what the sequel could add to the story. Hopefully the new script will bring the same fun and nostalgia as the original, and work on the musical numbers which has us cringing. They’ve also peaked our curiosity with the news that additional characters will be added.
