New York City will play a major part in Marvel’s four new Netflix series, as Disney announces the studio will be shooting 60 one-hour episodes in the city.
NYC will become the center of Marvel’s Netflix universe as Disney CEO Bob Iger and Governor Andrew Cuomo have announced in Times Square that the state has decided to accommodate the studio’s needs, which includes $4 million in tax incentives.
With 60 hour-long episodes planned, Marvel plans on making a big push into the niche which Netflix has claimed as its own. There will be 13 episodes for each of the four main characters which include the characters Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist. They also announced that there will be between four to eight mini-series which center around The Defenders team, which will link all the character’s stories together.
The Defenders were compared to The Avengers during the press release, stating that it’s a gathering of superheroes which will give all audience members a character to which they can relate.
This massive agreement calls for Marvel to develop four shows totaling 52 one-hour episodes, which will then culminate in a four to eight episode mini-series programming event. The first series will be focused on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and then Luke Cage.
Marvel’s President Kevin Feige recently revealed that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Jeph Loeb is more in charge of these new Netflix shows, while Feige will continue his reign over Marvel’s film division.
Bob Iger says, “Since 2008 Disney has directly contributed almost half a billion dollars to New York’s economy through television and film production, along with approximately 9,000 jobs for New Yorkers.”
He continued, saying, “The Governor’s policies make this great state a more affordable and attractive location, opening the door for even greater economic investment and job creation for New Yorkers. Our Marvel series for Netflix will inject millions directly into the local economy and create hundreds of new jobs.”
The Wrap reports that in the official press release it states that Marvel’s Netflix shows should create 3,000 jobs and its estimated that the production will generate $2.11 billion in spending this year alone, with companies to recoup $477 million.
This is certainly an incredible undertaking for the studio as well as the city of New York. After the massive success of Netflix’s own shows House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, we can only hope Marvel is able to achieve the same success with their superhero focused series.
