CW pulls the plug on ‘Katy Keene’ after just one season

The CW won’t be bringing Katy Keene fans a second season of the Riverdale spinoff.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The CW has officially cancelled Katy Keene after just one season.

Word of the show’s cancellation is even more significant given that it’s the only series that The CW has decided to pull the plug on this season. That is, of course, not including series such as The 100, Arrow, and Supernatural, all of which were already slated to organically end their long-standing runs on the network.

The once highly anticipated Riverdale spinoff found Pretty Little Liars alum Lucy Hale starring as the titular character first introduced in the Archie Comics.

Set in New York City, the short-lived series followed the lives of four 20-something friends chasing their dreams and trying to make it in New York City on Broadway, and in the music and fashion industry.

It also featured a new storyline for Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), whom fans of show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Archie television universe first met through Riverdale

Though Katy Keene didn’t perform as well in viewership, THR reports that The CW was hoping to see a spike in numbers after the spinoff series made its digital debut over on HBO Max. Unfortunately, it seems as though the series didn’t perform as well on the new streaming platform as the network would have liked.

Shortly after the news broke, Aguirre-Sacasa took to Twitter to commemorate the series’ first and only season with a throwback photo from early on in the show’s production.

“From the first #katykeene table read. It seems like a dream. So proud of this show and the beautiful souls who came together to make it,” tweeted the showrunner.

Katy Keene might be gone too soon, but there’ll be no shortage of Archie Comics inspired series for fans to sink their teeth into.

Over on The CW, Riverdale is still going strong and set to return next year for its fifth season. Meanwhile over on Netflix, fans can look forward to a fourth season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, rumored to be premiering via the streaming giant later on this year.
