The first trailer for Concussion shows Will Smith as the brilliant neuropathologist that fought to bring attention to football-related brain trauma in the NFL.
Sony’s film is based on the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, played by Smith, who was a Nigerian-born forensic neuropathologist that first discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a degenerative disease of the brain caused by repeated hits to the head.
Omalu would go on to reveal his findings, which the NFL refuted for some time. The true story shows a devastating look at what American football players risk by playing the popular sport. Watch the first trailer for Concussion below:
The first trailer for Concussion is an interesting look at what went on behind-the-scenes of Dr. Bennet Omalu’s work to determine whether CTE was the root cause of many of the cases in the NFL which resulted in players from the NFL ending up with life-altering brain damage.
Will Smith’s hope for an Oscar continues, and we imagine this will give him a shot this year as the content is still very relevant in the public’s eye. We’re curious how the NFL will feel about this film, as it seems to paint them in a bad light, but it’ll be an interesting look at what went on during the findings.
The film’s official synopsis: “Will Smith stars in Concussion, a dramatic thriller based on the incredible true David vs. Goliath story of American immigrant Dr. Bennet Omalu, the brilliant forensic neuropathologist who made the first discovery of CTE, a football-related brain trauma, in a pro player and fought for the truth to be known. Omalu’s emotional quest puts him at dangerous odds with one of the most powerful – and beloved – institutions in the world.”
