Possibly one of the weirdest, yet most interesting, television concepts ever: The Wizard of Oz as a medical drama. Say whaaat?
According to Entertainment Weekly, producers at CBS are developing a medical soap opera based in New York City that is inspired by the characters and themes that are immortalized in The Wizard of Oz.
Don’t give up hope just because it sounds like an odd concept! This project seems to have a lot of successful people involved, and it’s possible that this could be one of those shows that end up with it’s own fandom by the time it finishes airing.
Written by The Ghost Whisperer‘s Emily Fox and produced by Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman, who’ve produced FX’s Justified and CBS’s latest crime hit Elementary, this could definintely turn out to be pretty good!
This wouldn’t be the first time a television producer has taken something fantastical and combined it with reality. NBC’s Grimm manages to take on both fairy tales and crime investigation to a whole new level, and they’ve paved the way for CBS’s Wizard of Oz project to be a hit.
Although we can’t imagine exactly how much inspiration they’re gaining from Wizard of Oz, we’re hoping that it involves munchkins, witches, and some sidekicks who’re missing a few organs. We can totally see the good witch trying to sew up all the poor patients that the wicked witch of the west has been beating up in the slums of New York.
As for romance, we’re curious to see what route Fox decides to go with her characters. Will this introduce some bizarre love square between Dorothy, the lion, the tin man and the scarecrow? We just shuddered – let’s hope not! Although we’re definitely not opposed to a good love story if it’s original and not creepy.
