The movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical, Cats, is heading to the big screen way sooner than you might think!
According to Billboard, Universal has officially settled on a release date for their upcoming adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.
The feature length musical will officially be hitting theaters just in time for next year’s holiday season on December 20, 2019.
While it’s good news for fans of the iconic Broadway hit, the release date also spells out some bad news for another musical adaptation Universal also has coming down the pipeline.
December 20, 2019 was originally intended to be the release date for the highly anticipated adaptation of the musical Wicked. Now that Cats has occupied that spot, the studio says it intends to set and announce a new release date for Wicked at a later date.
Moviegoer and theater junkies alike first heard word that Working Title and Universal were gearing up to bring us a big screen adaptation of Cats earlier this summer.
News of the adaptation also brought word that the studio has already secured some pretty big names to star in the adaptation of one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals.
Stars who have already joined the cast of the film include Jennifer Hudson, Sir Ian McKellan, James Corden, and Taylor Swift.
In addition, the adaptation is being helmed by director Tom Hooper, who most recently served as director for the big screen adaptation of Les Miserables.
We’ll be curious to see who else gets tapped to bring the iconic musical to life on the big screen!
