The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, as of this weekend, is one of the top ten films ever at the North American box office.
On Friday, it finally passed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest to claim the number ten spot.
Earlier last week, Catching Fire passed The Lion King. The Hunger Games sequel has now made $423.6 million at the domestic box office – a staggering number.
Catching Fire has also surpassed the original Hunger Games, which peaked at #12 in 2012 before being surpassed by Catching Fire, Dark Knight Rises, and Iron Man 3. Here are the rest of the top ten: Avatar, Titanic, Avengers, Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises, Shrek 2, ET, Star Wars: A New Hope and The Phantom Menace. In short, Catching Fire is in some pretty good company!
Catching Fire, as the #1 movie of 2013, has achieved many stunning box office feats. It is the only sequel to a movie that grossed $400 million to improve upon the original. The box office for this series has reached heights that were reached neither by Harry Potter, nor by Twilight. Summit is no doubt hoping that the coming Divergent film can achieve even a fraction of Hunger Games’ success.
The Hunger Games does appear to be a mostly American phenomenon. Almost half of its worldwide gross came from the domestic box office, whereas the norm is for about two-thirds of a film’s worldwide gross to come from overseas. Catching Fire has made $863 million worldwide, which is good enough for #35 on the all-time chart, but obviously nowhere near the stratospheric numbers achieved domestically.
Are you excited to see Catching Fire in the top ten? And do you think Mockingjay will continue the series’ stunning results at the box office?
