BTS ‘Map of the Soul: 7’ comeback trailer: ‘Interlude: Shadow’

“Interlude: Shadow” became the first comeback trailer from the album, featuring a solo song by Suga!

A press release for the song revealed more details:

Global superstars BTS unveils “Interlude : Shadow”, the comeback trailer for their fourth studio album MAP OF THE SOUL : 7 scheduled for release on February 21. In “Interlude : Shadow”, SUGA presents a powerful rap about the responsibilities and fears that follow the success achieved as a member of BTS. Within the comeback trailer, he is seen surrounded by a crowd that personifies his multiple egos and desires.

“Interlude : Shadow” is an epic yet sentimental Emo Hip Hop track that draws samplings from the instruments of “INTRO : O!RUL8,2?” from the 2013 release O!RUL8,2?.

MAP OF THE SOUL : 7 is set for worldwide release on February 21, at 6:00 PM (KST) / 4:00 AM (EST).

‘Interlude: Shadow’ English lyrics:

I wanna be a rap star
I wanna be the top
I wanna be a rockstar
I want it all mine
I wanna be rich
I wanna be the king
I wanna go win
I wanna be …

I wanna be a rap star
I wanna be the top
I wanna be a rockstar
I want it all mine
I wanna be rich
I wanna be the king
I wanna be me
I want a big thing

Oh boy let me see
I got a big dream yeah
Woo I wondered everyday how far I’d go
I came to my senses and I find myself here

Yeah, hmm, shadow at my feet
Look down, it’s gotten even bigger
I run but the shadow follows
As dark as the light’s intense

I’m afraid, flying high is terrifying

No one told me
How lonely it is up here
I can leap in the air but also plunge
Now I know running away could be an option too, pause

People say, there’s splendor in that bright light
But my growing shadow swallows me and becomes a monster

Up high, high, and higher, higher

I only go higher and vertigo overtakes me
I rise, rise. I hate it
I pray, pray, hoping to be okay

The moment I’m flying high as I wished
My shadow grows in that blasting stark light
Please don’t let me shine

Don’t let me down
Don’t let me fly
Now I’m afraid

The moment I face myself brought lowest
It so happens that I’m flying the highest
Please don’t let me shine

Don’t let me down
Don’t let me fly
Now I’m scared
Don’t let me shine

I wanna be a rap star
I wanna be the top
I wanna be a rockstar
I want it all mine
I wanna be rich
I wanna be the king
I wanna go win
I wanna be …

I wanna be a rap star
I wanna be the top
I wanna be a rockstar
I want it all mine
I wanna be rich
I wanna be the king
I wanna be me

I wanna be …

Yeah I’m you, you are me, now do you know
Yeah you are me, I’m you, now you do know
We are one body, sometimes we will clash

You can never break me off, this you must know
Yeah yeah can’t break me off, whatever you do
Yeah you’ll be at ease if you admit it too
Yeah succeed or fail, whichever way you flow
Yeah you can’t escape, wherever you go

I am you, you are me, now you do know
You are me, I am you, now do you know
We are one body and we are gonna clash
We are you, we are me, this do you know

CONNECT, BTS:

To coincide with the release of Map of the Soul:7 BTS launched a global project to connect artists across the world!

A press release further explained the project stating:

BTS, the pioneering global superstars from Korea, today introduce CONNECT, BTS, a series of major art projects to go on show over the coming months in five cities on four continents, open free to the public. CONNECT, BTS crosses geographical borders in a series of projects by different curators who resonated with BTS’ philosophy. It will be extensively documented online to reach a wide audience and officially launches on January 14, 2020.

In London, the Serpentine Galleries will present Catharsis, a new work by Jakob Kudsk Steensen, immersing audiences in a digital simulation of a re-imagined old-growth forest. Set up as a single continuous shot that moves from the watery underground roots to the viewpoint of the canopy, sunlight, wind, moving leaves and water all follow individual timelines and speeds, resulting in a simulated landscape where time takes new forms. This audio-visual work can be experienced at the Serpentine and anywhere around the world via a dedicated website catharsis.live. January 14 – March 15, 2020.

Gropius Bau in Berlin will present Rituals of Care, a series of performance works by over 17 international artists including Jelili Atiku, boychild, Cevdet Erek, Marcelo Evelin, Maria Hassabi, Mette Ingvartsen, Baba Murah and Candomblé Berlin, Antonija Livingstone and Bill Fontana, among others. Curated by Stephanie Rosenthal and Noémie Solomon, the performance program spans through experimental choreography, healing practices, sonic environments, moving landscapes, and collective gatherings. Together, these interdisciplinary works and practices explore the necessary conditions for coming together and tending to environments, to physical and spiritual worlds and to other beings. January 15 – February 2, 2020.

The Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno will present Fly with Aerocene Pacha. For the first time in history, a human being will float into the sky powered only by the sun and the air we breathe, without fossil fuels, solar panels, batteries or helium. A synthesis of art, science and environmental activism, Aerocene Pacha will launch in Salinas Grandes, Argentina’s great salt lake. This work also stands in solidarity with the indigenous communities there, whose land has been despoiled by lithium mining. This ambitious project will set several world records for fully solar, human free flight. Fly with Aerocene Pacha on Instagram and online. The resulting film will be shown in Buenos Aires until March 22. January 21 – March 22, 2020.

Zaha Hadid’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Seoul’s newest and most iconic landmark, will be the location for two major public exhibitions: British-born artist Ann Veronica Janssens will create Green, Yellow, Pink, a mysterious disorienting sensory environment filled with a haze of colored artificial mist, giving sculptural form to light. Korean artist Yiyun Kang will present Beyond the Scene, a digital environment on a large-scale, a reimagining of BTS’ signature dance movements as seen through the techniques of projection mapping. January 28 – March 20, 2020.

New York’s Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 3 will be the site of the creation of a vast ‘drawing in space’ by internationally acclaimed British artist Antony Gormley. New York Clearing (2020) is a single line made up of 18 kilometres of square aluminium tubing that loops and coils without beginning or end, turning itself into an environment for the viewer that counters the grid of modernism and the city with swooping lines of energy. February 4 – March 27, 2020.

‘Map of the Soul: 7’ 1st Single Release – ‘Black Swan’:

A press release for the single explained that, “in ‘Black Swan’, BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden.”

“The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself.”

BTS and Big Hit also released an “Art Film performed by MN Dance Company” in collaboration with the song.

“The video begins with the words of dancer Martha Graham, from which the song drew its inspiration. Inside a surreal space, seven dancers reinterpret the atmosphere of the song through modern dance moves reminiscent of a ‘Black Swan’ rising from the ashes of trial and hardship.”

‘Black Swan’ English lyrics:

Do your thang
Do your thang with me now
Do your thang
Do your thang with me now

What’s my thang
What’s my thang tell me now
Tell me now
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Ayy
The heart no longer races
When hearing the music play
Tryna pull up
Seems like time has stopped
Oh that would be my first death
I been always afraid of

If this can no longer resonate
No longer make my heart vibrate
Then like this may be how I die my first death
But what if that moment’s right now
Right now

Heartbeat pulsing slow in my ears bump bump bump
Try to flee but back into the maw jump jump jump
No song affects me anymore
Crying out a silent cry

Ocean with all light silenced shut yeah yeah yeah
My wandering feet held in a rut yeah yeah yeah
Every noise and sound’s been cut yeah yeah yeah
Killin’ me now
Do you hear me yeah

Sinking slowly like in a trance nah nah nah
Struggle but it’s all ocean floor nah nah
Every moment becomes eternity yeah yeah yeah
Film it now
Do you hear me yeah

Do your thang
Do your thang with me now
Do your thang
Do your thang with me now
What’s my thang
What’s my thang tell me now
Tell me now
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Deeper
Yeah I think I’m goin’ deeper
I keep losing focus
No, just let go of me
Let my own feet carry me
I’ll go in myself
In the deepest depths
I saw myself
Slowly, I open my eyes
I’m in my workroom, it’s my studio
The waves go
darkly by in a throe
But I’ll never get dragged away again
Inside
I saw myself, myself

Heartbeat racing in my ears bump bump bump
Eyes wide open into my forest jump jump jump
Nothing can devour me
I shout out with ferocity

Do your thang
Do your thang with me now
Do your thang
Do your thang with me now

What’s my thang
What’s my thang tell me now
Tell me now
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Ocean with all light silenced shut yeah yeah yeah
My wandering feet held in a rut yeah yeah yeah
Every noise and sound’s been cut yeah yeah yeah
Killin’ me now
Do you hear me yeah

Sinking slowly like in a trance nah nah nah
Struggle but it’s all ocean floor nah nah
Every moment becomes eternity yeah yeah yeah
Film it now
Do you hear me yeah

Do your thang
Do your thang with me now
Do your thang
Do your thang with me now

What’s my thang
What’s my thang tell me now
Tell me now
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

BTS ‘Map of the Soul: 7’ comeback trailer: ‘Outro: Ego’

“Outro: Ego” was the second comeback trailer for Map of the Soul: 7, featuring a solo song by J-Hope!

A press release for the song revealed more details:

With j-hope at its forefront, “Outro: Ego” is an energetic pop genre song featuring African rhythm. The track samples the beats from the intro of BTS’ debut album 2 COOL 4 SKOOL released in June 2013.

In the track, j-hope sings how his path that led to BTS ‘j-hope’ hasn’t been easy, but nevertheless was chosen by fate and is willing to keep on that lane. In the comeback trailer, the lyrics of the song go over the last seven years since debut. Similarly, BTS’ contents are briefly visualized as if looking back at the past. At the end of the video, visual effects reach their heights as j-hope arrives at a huge, colorful city in which the artist’s current image is projected.

‘Outro: Ego’ English lyrics:

I go back every day
To me of yesterday
To the life of giving up
I let myself go away

But in this world, you know
There are truths unchanged
Time rushes ever forward
There’s no ifs, buts, or maybes

Almost forgotten memories return
Touch of the devil, fateful recall
I still wonder, why did they beckon again
Every day ask me, guess it, whip it, repeat oh
Nothing that will change, so
I lock it up again, close
‘How much love? How much joy?’
Soothe myself and stay calm, alone

Yeah I don’t care, it’s all
Choices by my fate, so we’re here
Look ahead, the way is shinin’
Keep goin’ now

(Ready set and begin)
That way, way, way
Wherever my way
Only Ego Ego Ego
Just trust myself

Life not of j-hope but Jeong Ho-Seok flashes by
It must have been full of regret with no hope till I die
My dancing was chasing ghosts
Blaming my dream, asking why I live and breathe
Oh my God
Uh time goes by
Seven years of anguish come out finally
Oppressions all resolved
Into my heart come answers from my most trusted

‘Only one hope, only one soul’
‘Only one smile, only one you’
Definite answer to the truth of the world
Only one and unchanging me
Right

Now I don’t care, it’s all
Choices by my fate, so we’re here
Look ahead, the way is shinin’
Keep goin’ now

(Ready set and begin)
That way, way, way
Wherever my way
Only Ego Ego Ego
Just trust myself

Way I trust
Way I go
Became my fate
Became my core

Hard it was
And sad it was
Still reassured and
Made me know myself

Map of the Soul
Map of the All
That’s my Ego
Map of the Soul
Map of the All
That’s my Ego
