‘Black Widow’ quotes to honor Natasha, from ‘Iron Man 2’ to ‘Endgame’

These Black Widow quotes make up some of the best lines in the MCU, from her debut in Iron Man 2 to her goodbye in Avengers: Endgame.

Scarlett Johansson has been playing Natasha Romanoff—aka Black Widow—for over 10 years, and every iteration of her character has been more iconic than the last.

From her introduction in Iron Man 2, when she donned the suit for the first time, to her kickass role in Endgame, where she made the ultimate sacrifice, Natasha has been one of the most dynamic and interesting Avengers on the roster.

And with that level of badassery comes some killer Black Widow quotes. We wanted to honor our fallen hero by pulling her best lines from all seven of the movies she’s had a major role in.

Black Widow quotes

‘Iron Man 2’ (2010)

black widow quotes

‘I would do whatever I wanted to do, with whomever I wanted to do it with.’

After Tony asks “Natalie Rushman” what she would do if this were her last birthday, Natasha responds with this rather sultry line. It certainly inspires Tony’s explosive bash in the following scene, but it also makes you wonder who Natasha would spend her final moments with if she had seen them coming.

‘That’s not up to you.’

After Tony learns Natasha’s true identity and he tries to fire her, Black Widow lets him know he’s not actually the boss. Whether she’s talking about Piper or Fury is anyone’s guess, but it is fun to see her rub it in Tony’s face.

‘Fallaces sunt rerum species.’

One of the running jokes in Iron Man 2 is that Natasha couldn’t possibly speak Latin because it’s a dead language. She proves him wrong by uttering this phrase, which translates to “appearances are deceptive.” As she explains, however, what she really means is “you can either drive yourself home, or I can have you collected.”

‘Eyes on the road.’

One of the shorter and snappier Black Widow quotes in the movie, this line occurs when Happy and Natasha are about to storm the building to take down Hammer. She’s changing into her suit, and Happy takes his eyes off the road for a little too long. It’s a gentle reminder as far as Natasha’s warnings go.

‘Save it for the honeymoon. You got incoming, Tony. Looks like the fight’s coming to you.’

For once, Natasha’s all business. She doesn’t have time for Tony and Pepper’s squabbles when they’ve got bigger fish to fry. It’s too bad she didn’t get in on the action at the end of the movie, but it is pretty satisfying to see her arrest Justin Hammer.

‘Avengers’ (2012)

black widow interrogation

‘I’m in the middle of an interrogation. This moron is giving me everything.’

This is one of the best introduction scenes from the entirety of the MCU, and this particular Black Widow quote is sure to make you chuckle. Her following line, “Let me put you on hold,” is also great, if for no other reason than we get to watch Coulson hang out while she kicks ass.

‘Love is for children; I owe him a debt.’

Another great Natasha Romanoff quote, this one is also particularly deceptive. If there’s one person on the planet Natasha trusts above all, it’s going to be Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye. Yes, she owes him a debt, but you can’t argue there’s no love between them, too.

‘Thank you for your cooperation.’

That moment we realize Natasha beat Loki at his own game is satisfying each and every time we watch it. This is probably one of the most iconic Black Widow quotes, and not just because it made a reappearance in her 2021 solo film.

‘This is monsters and magic and nothing we were ever trained for.’

This might not be one of the more famous lines, but it’s an excellent reminder that Nat and Clint are just humans. They fight alongside gods on a daily basis, but they’re still just trying to figure it out one day at a time.

‘No, we could use a little worse.’

When Bruce Banner finally shows up to fight, Natasha tells him she’s seen worse. He apologizes, but she wasn’t being critical—the Hulk is a pretty good guy to have on your side.

‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’ (2014)

‘Hey, fellas. Either one of you know where the Smithsonian is? I’m here to pick up a fossil.’

Natasha’s banter with Steve feels natural, like something they’ve honed over dozens of missions together. Whether you think these two have a romantic connection or not, it’s nice to see them play off one another. You can tell how much they enjoy the other’s company.

‘I only act like I know everything, Rogers.’

This is bound to produce a chuckle from the audience upon every viewing. Natasha might be a super spy, but sometimes Fury leaves her in the dark, too. Confidence is half the game in her field, and seeing her admit this to Rogers is a nice insight into the real Natasha Romanoff.

‘Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable.’

Yes, they do. But Natasha knows what she’s doing, and when she tells Steve to kiss her, it works. Rumlow’s eyes skip right over them, and they escape right from under Hydra’s noses.

‘I’m sorry, did I step on your moment?’

This isn’t the last time we’ve seen Natasha use the Photostatic Veil (aka the Nano Mask), and every time gets more exciting than the last. In Winter Soldier, she uses it to trick Alexander Pierce and gain the upper hand. He had it coming.

‘Yes, the world is a vulnerable place, and yes, we helped make it that way. But we’re also the ones best qualified to defend it. So if you want to arrest me, arrest me. You’ll know where to find me.’

The way Natasha walks out of that courtroom with her head held high is one of the most iconic shots of the character. This moment might come back to haunt her in a few films, but at the time, this was the best she could do. They had to expose Hydra, even if that meant exposing everything she’d done in the past.

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

black widow the hulk

‘Hey, big guy. Sun’s getting real low.’

The lullaby is a vital part of keeping the Hulk under control, and the fact that Natasha is the one to use it on Bruce says a lot about their level of trust. Once again, she’s just human, but there’s very little fear in her eyes as she approaches him.

‘All my friends are fighters. And here comes this guy, spends his life avoiding the fight because he knows he’ll win.’

Whatever you think of Natasha and Bruce’s romantic interest in each other, this is a great line from Age of Ultron and describes Banner perfectly.

‘That’s not a question I need answered.’

Natasha’s response to being offered a chance to lift Mjolnir is hilarious and enigmatic. Does she not think she’s worthy, or does she not care?

‘Are you sure he’s gonna be OK? Pretending to need this guy really brings the team together.’

Much like her banter with Steve, Natasha’s playful teasing of Clint is hilarious. These two have been through so much together, and even though we know how much he means to her, it’s fun to watch her pick on him.

‘There’s worse ways to go. Where else am I gonna get a view like this?’

Sometimes a Black Widow quotes hurts way more in retrospect than it did in the moment. This line is pretty innocuous when she says it in Ultron, but considering we now know how she dies, we can only wish she did have a better view.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016)

‘I’m not thanking that thing.’

Natasha has a playful relationship with everyone, doesn’t she? There’s always been great chemistry between her and Sam, but she draws the line at talking to a mechanical bird.

‘Staying together is more important that how we stay together.’

Perhaps one of the more controversial Black Widow quotes, this one is still a solid choice to make this list. Of course, Steve would disagree, but you can’t blame Natasha for seeing it this way. She finally found a family, and she doesn’t want to lose them just because they’re not currently seeing eye to eye.

‘You could at least recognize me!’

In the middle of fighting for her life against the Winter Soldier, Natasha’s quip is bound to get a few chuckles. They’ve met once before, and Bucky definitely left a mark. But did Natasha leave an impression, too?

‘Are we still friends?’

“Depends on how hard you hit me,” Clint says. Even thought they’re on opposite sides of this mess, these two are still pulling punches. They might disagree, but there’s no reason to go overboard here. An opinion that Scarlet Witch clearly doesn’t share.

‘I’m not the one that needs to watch their back.’

Tony might be pissed at Nat for letting Steve and Bucky go, but she wouldn’t be Black Widow if she didn’t go down without a fight. Natasha knows she did the right thing, and if Tony could pull his head out of his ass, maybe he’d realize it, too.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018)

‘You could use some [nerve] right now.’

Infinity War didn’t give Natasha’s the best lines, but this one—spoken to Ross—does hit home. She’s telling him to hell with his rules because there’s a bigger threat coming than an Avenger breaking the Sokovia Accords.

‘We don’t want to kill you, but we will.’

There’s no way the Black Order could’ve known how much of a threat the Avengers would actually be, and when Natasha says this to Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive, you’re aware of how much power the team actually has over them.

‘Hi, Bruce.’

Yeah, it was definitely awkward, but also kind of sweet. Natasha and Bruce didn’t get to see where their relationship would go, but it’s nice to acknowledge the elephant in the room. Thanks, Sam.

‘Where’s your other friend?’

Natasha’s pretty good at rubbing salt in the wound, and when she asks Proxima Midnight where Corvus Glaive is, knowing he’s likely been taken out of the equation, you can see just how much Thanos’ warrior wants to rip her limb from limb.

‘She’s not alone.’

As probably the best Black Widow quote in Infinity War, this one packs a punch because you see Okoye and Natasha step up to the plate to fight along side Scarlet Witch. The three of them are powerhouses in their own right, and it’s always fun to watch them fight.

‘Avengers: Endgame (2019)

‘You know, if you’re about to tell me to look on the bright side—I’m about to hit you in the head with a peanut butter sandwich.’

Natasha is looking pretty rough at the beginning of Endgame, but can you blame her? She’s been through so much in the last five years, and she’s barely keeping it together. She knows Steve is just trying to help, but sometimes, there are no words that can.

‘Even if there’s a small chance that we can undo this, I mean, we owe it to everyone who is not in this room to try.’

As low as Natasha was in the beginning of the movie, you can tell she’s gotten fired up at the prospect of saving her friends and bringing them all back. And she’s got a point—who would they be if they didn’t try to reverse what Thanos had done? Certainly not the Avengers.

‘Scott, I get emails from a raccoon. So, nothing sounds crazy anymore.’

This Black Widow quote really doesn’t need any explanation. Rocket Raccoon sends Natasha emails. What else is there to say?

‘Whatever it takes.’

Famous last words. As hard as it is to deal with the fact that Natasha isn’t coming back, she knew what she was signing up for. She was willing to risk everything to bring back her friends. And she died knowing she helped them get one step closer to making that a reality.

‘What, you think I want to do it? I’m trying to save *your* life, you idiot.’

On the precipice of a cliff, we return to one of the longest and strongest relationships in the MCU. Clint and Natasha have been through so much together, and while this was never going to be an easy moment, you can see how much it means to Natasha that she’s the reason Clint will live to see his family again.

‘Black Widow’ (2021)

‘And you should know I’m a better shot when I’m pissed off.’

Going toe to toe with the Taskmaster for the first time, Natasha doesn’t really know what she’s up against. Then again, piss her off enough, and she’ll certainly do her best to even the odds.

‘Pain only makes us stronger.’

As far as Black Widow quotes go, this is the most iconic one from this film and one of Natasha’s best lines to date. It’s the reason why she’s gotten as far in life as she has, and it’s also how she’s learned to keep her heart all these years.

‘All that time I spent posing, I was trying to actually do something good to make up for all the pain and suffering that we caused. Trying to be more than just a trained killer.’

Yelena gets one of the funniest moments in Black Widow, but Natasha isn’t up for a laugh. Yeah, she might be a poser, but she’s still trying to do something good. She has a lot of red in her ledger, and while she may never be able to wipe it clean, she’ll die trying.

‘What, you don’t think I can take a punch?

The way Natasha eggs on General Dreykov is just a little slice of sweet revenge after everything he’s put her through. Though he’s done horrific things in his life, he’s hid behind his Widows for decades. He’s gotten soft. And Natasha is ready to show him just how dangerous he’s made her.

‘Don’t worry, I got this.’

Melina tells Natasha to take care of herself, and even though it doesn’t exactly work out for Natasha in the end, this is a great line to finish off our list. Nat is confident in being able to bring the Avengers back together, and even though the battle ahead will be a deadly one, she’s finally found her place in the world—thanks to both of her families.
