Billy Porter in talks to join Sony’s ‘Cinderella’

Billy Porter is reported to be in talks to join Sony’s re-imagined, musical version of Cinderella. The role he’d play? The fairy godmother.

Sony is working on bringing us a new, musical version of Cinderella that offers a slightly new spin on the classic tale. One of those new spins? The fairy godmother role is getting a bit of an upgrade, as it is reported that Billy Porter is currently in talks to fill the role.

Variety reports that Billy Porter is currently in the middle of joining the project, and that he would join Camilla Cabella in the new movie. Variety reached out to Porter’s camp for a comment, but they didn’t respond.

But this version of Cinderella is certainly sounding like an interesting one. Obviously, Porter’s potential casting will break the norm of usually hiring a woman to play the role of the fairy godmother.

However, the entire premise is a bit different (which makes sense as this is a Sony production of Cinderella, not a Disney one). Cabella will be, as Variety describes it, “involved with the music” for the film, which came from an idea from late-night host James Corden.

It will still tell the story of an orphaned young girl living with her cruel stepmother, but the story will be a bit more “music-oriented.” Musical theater fans know that Rogers and Hammerstein have already made a pretty amazing musical Cinderella (who can forget the movie version starring the amazing Whitney Houston and Bernadette Peters). It seems, however, that this Corden version is different from anything we’ve seen before.

Billy Porter could certainly bring something truly special to this new version of Cinderella. We’ve all fallen in love with him as Pray Tell on FX’s Pose, and he even earned himself an Emmy for the role.

We really hope we get to see what he’ll do if he is indeed cast in Cinderella. Hopefully, Sony and Porter’s team get through negotiations soon so we can get an official casting announcement!
