It’s December, meaning there’s no better time to curl up next to the warm glow of the television and stream the best Christmas movies available on Netflix.
Here’s how we picture it: You’re sitting down on the couch or bed, staring at Netflix, wondering what to watch to brighten your holiday. Luckily for you, there are quite a few good options to stream on Netflix throughout the month.
Sure, these movies may not be Oscar-worthy, but they’re Christmas movies and they’ll put you in that holiday spirit. Here’s what’s not to miss (click any title to jump to it on Netflix):
‘A Very Murray Christmas’
Let’s start with something entirely new. Netflix and Bill Murray are debuting a holiday special on December 4 starring the comedian and several of his high-profile friends, including Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, and George Clooney. As you can tell from the trailer, it looks delightful.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: TBA
‘Christmas with the Cranks’
It’s not The Santa Clause, but it’s a Tim Allen Christmas movie co-starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd. Beggars can’t be choosers!
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 5% (oof)
‘Love, Actually’
A modern holiday classic — what more do you have to hear? Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Andrew Lincoln, and so many others co-star in this wonderful romantic comedy. Make sure you watch it this year, ’cause who knows if it’ll be available for streaming next year! After all, it’s always the best movies that seem to disappear.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 63%
‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’
Disney and Tim Burton’s Halloween/Christmas musical is a thrill to watch every year thanks to its catchy music and beautiful stop motion animation. You can’t not watch this between October and December.
Here’s a unique trailer for the film that brags about the movie’s animation style:
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 94%
‘The Radio City Christmas Spectacular’
If you can’t make it to New York to catch the Rockettes, this is a great alternative (and much more affordable).
Rotten Tomatoes rating: N/A
‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’
With a third Bridget Jones movie currently filming, now’s the time to watch the original starring Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant. With those three names in one movie, it’s hard to say no.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%
‘White Christmas’
A 1954 Christmas musical starring Bing Crosby, this one is for those of you who are looking for a more “classic” Christmas story. This trailer is worth watching alone, as it’s been remastered in HD yet brags about a new technology called “Vistavision.”
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 76%
‘A Christmas Carol’
This is the original — not the Jim Carrey remake — meaning you should definitely check it out. This is another “classic” Christmas story you can’t miss.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 100%
‘The Legend of Frosty the Snowman’
No, this isn’t the 1969 classic animated movie. This is a lame, straight-to-DVD ripoff. It’s Netflix’s only Frosty option, though, so you’ll have to make due. Here’s a good piece of trivia about this sequel: The narrator is Burt Reynolds.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: N/A
‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’
The reviews may not be the best, but it’s Disney and Jonathan Taylor Thomas, so there’s that. Think of this one as an inverted Home Alone.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 23%
‘Fireplace for your Home’
As the title implies, it’s a fireplace. For your home. If you’re lacking a fireplace but need one to metaphorically warm the room, this is the perfect solution.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: N/A, but you know it would be rated 100% by critics if it hit theaters
And for the kids…
If you’re looking for kids Christmas movies on Netflix, the streaming site has a few options, including:
– Thomas & Friends: A Very Thomas Christmas
– Thomas & Friends: Ultimate Christmas (a collection of holiday-themed Thomas the Tank Engine episodes from the show’s golden years)
