‘Atlantis Lost’ book review
From the moment we cracked open Atlantis Rising, we knew the fate of the island. It was always going to end in tragedy, but it is often the journey, not the destination, that ends up meaning the most to us. In the case of Atlantis Lost, that is also true, though it doesn’t change the reality of the situation.
As he often does, T.A. Barron takes elements of a legend and breathes new life into it. Much as he did with Merlin, the Atlantis Saga showed us a new side to a story we were already familiar with. It brought to life the people that lived on the island and told us in startling detail exactly how their home returned to the sea.
If you’re a fan of the Merlin Saga, as I am, you’ll be pleased to know that although this is an entirely different story in an entirely different world, many of the same themes are threaded throughout the tale.
Humans are as creative as they are destructive, and Mother Nature frequently bears the brunt of that tendency to destroy in order to build anew. The few champions who stand in the way of that destruction are often overpowered and outnumbered, but hope springs eternal for those fighting in the name of a cause they truly believe in.
Knowing Atlantis was doomed from the outset is a difficult way to enter a series such as this, but it doesn’t stop you from falling in love with the various characters who populate this world. This tiny glimpse into their lives makes the journey to the end slightly more bearable.
We must also remember that although creation often results in destruction, so does destruction often result in creation. From the ashes a phoenix rises, and so too from the sea does hope for a new beginning emerge.
