Sony is narrowing down its pool of potential directors for Venom 2.
With Spider-Man: Far From Home out in theaters, Sony is turning its attention to finding a replacement director for the follow-up to Venom. Ruben Fleischer, who directed the first Venom movie, is unable to return due to being tied up in post-production for Zombieland: Double Tap.”
Variety reports that Andy Serkis (Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle), Travis Knight (Bumblebee) and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) are part of the shortlist of directors in the running for the job. A front-runner has yet to appear, according to Variety, and all three are still in the meeting stage.
Tom Hardy, who played journalist Eddie Brock, who is taken over by the alien symbiote known as Venom in the first movie, is set to reprise his role in the sequel. Sony is hoping to start production in the fall, so a director is likely to be locked in during the coming weeks.
With an untitled Marvel sequel being slated for October 2020, the news that Sony is actively on the hunt for a director for Venom 2 lends credibility to the rumor that this slot is reserved for the hit movie — which grossed $855 million worldwide.
It is not yet known whether the end-credits stinger appearance of Cletus Kasady, a.k.a. Carnage — played by Woody Harrelson — will set the stage for the sequel, but with the characters of Venom and Carnage going head-to-head across the comics, it is likely he will return in some way.
