Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot gets fans up to speed on Yo-Yo’s between-season adventures, and sheds light on a S.H.I.E.L.D. in transition.
The six episode web series focuses in on beloved recurring character, Elena Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley). Yo-Yo’s Inhuman speed has earned her a place in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s stickiest moments. But it is Elena’s conviction, fearlessness, and snarky humor that have secured her place in fans’ hearts.
In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot, Elena grapples with the fresh restrictions of the Sokovia Accords. Between her natural suspicion for authority, and the need to fulfill a very personal mission, Elena finds herself at odds with familiar faces in S.H.I.E.L.D.
*cough* MACE *cough*
Elena greets Daisy, who is working out her aggressions on a punching bag. In advance of Mace’s attentions, Elena tells Daisy that “Maybe we should get our story straight about that night.”
“How much do they know?” Daisy asks.
“Not much,” Elena admits, leading into our central flashback.
As we recover from the sudden wash of feels from Coulson’s gift to Elena, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot charges forward into five episodes of subtle espionage and snark. A television named Bridget, a long-awaited date, and May kicking ass without even trying round out the story. At the same time, contemplations of justice, power, and responsibility add further depth to Yo-Yo’s story.
Concluding with a beautiful coda on both Daisy and Yo-Yo’s emotional and political allegiances, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot works as a beautiful compliment to the season at large. Funny, poignant, and quirky, the web series feels like an important brick in the construction of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4.
Harmonizing perfectly with the main story’s themes and ideas, and anchored firmly by Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot isn’t just an addendum. It’s a resonant movement within a larger piece, that gears us up even more for the further adventures of our healing team.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 4×09 airs on Jan. 10 at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.
