ABC has released a new synopsis for the back half of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 — and it gives us plenty to worry think about.
The synopsis refreshes viewers on the pivotal events of the first 10 episodes — the alien city, Coulson’s resurrection, and Daniel Whitehall’s shocking (but thoroughly unmourned) demise.
“But new threats to the world have arisen,” ABC warns. (Of course they have.) These threats include “Skye’s father, Cal, who now seeks retribution against Coulson for stealing his revenge against Whitehall,” and, “a disturbing alliance between former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Ward and Agent 33.”
So the answer to the question, “Can Agent 33’s life get any worse?” appears to be an emphatic, “Hell yes.”
The list of dangers faced by Team Coulson also includes a few surprises. Raina, who spent 2/3rds of her time on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trying to become an Inhuman will apparently be displeased with the results. According to ABC, the “enigmatic” young woman “struggles with her transformation into something inhuman by the alien Obelisk and seeks vengeance.”
Even worse, Skye makes it onto the list, in a sadly predictable capacity. According to the network, Skye’s “lack of experience with her new abilities may threaten the safety of those she loves.”
Not that we haven’t seen that coming, thanks to recent promos for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s return. But it’s still rather vexing to see it there in black-and-white. Stay strong, Skye!
“Meanwhile,” ABC continues, making our lives even better, “Bobbi and Mack begin the next phase of a plan which seems to have grave repercussions for Coulson and his team.”
Oh, crap.
Naturally, said team is “unaware that there’s another mysterious force moving against them. And as Hunter is forced to make the biggest choice of his life, Coulson will find his mission threatened by this shocking endgame.”
Oh, crap. Bobbi’s hidden thumb drive from mid-season finale definitely promised to introduce a few issues, but we didn’t expect Mockingbird to actively be working against Coulson and his team.
This calls for a GIF.
In related news, the press release reveals that Adrianne Palicki has been upgraded from guest star to main cast member. Ordinarily this would fill us with glee; now we just wonder if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is trying to have more bad guys than good guys in its cast.
The synopsis continues with teases of both good guys and bad guys:
“New faces will also make their debuts, including May’s ex-husband, who must help the team with their most personal mission yet, and Robert Gonzales, whose debut will rock the foundations of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“Coulson will continue to attempt to rebuild the once revered and illustrious S.H.I.E.L.D. organization,” the synopsis concludes, “but he will also discover that some he thought were trustworthy are not, and things are not what they seem.”
Looks like we’re all in for an education when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to our long-suffering television screens.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 11, “Aftershocks,” airs on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
