Black City by Elizabeth Richards is the latest young adult novel to be optioned before its release. Black City doesn’t hit shelves until November 13, but Screen Gems thought it had potential for the big screen.
Black City takes place in a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall, and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war. Two sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable – they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash’s long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they’ll be executed – but their feelings are too strong.
When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.
Black City is Elizabeth Richards’ debut novel. Before becoming an author, Richards reviewed video games and worked as a travel writer. In her free time she started a lifestyle website for teen girls. Some interesting facts about Richards: her favorite book is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and she may be a little in love with Dan Radcliffe.
Screen Gems preemptively optioned the novel based on buzz from online and young adult circles. Currently Screen Gems is looking for a writer to adapt the novel. No doubt with all the dystopian craze created by The Hunger Games this is Screen Gems’ chance for competition.
