Initially the idea of Doctor Who going to film in New Zealand with legendary movie director Peter Jackson might sound far-fetched. On the other hand, Peter Jackson and Matt Smith might just make this happen.
As part of the current promotion of the Doctor Who series, the Waikaito Times, a New Zealand newspaper, had a phone conversation with Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor, and he’s quite keen on the idea of coming to New Zealand.
I’m told it’s glorious. I’m told it’s quite similar to England. Let’s get Peter Jackson to direct one and go and make it in New Zealand. I would love to, I will campaign endlessly to come over and film there,” Smith, who has never been to New Zealand. There’s clearly a great film industry out there. It’s something I would be very interested in it’s just whether we can persuade the producers to fly us all over.
Now realistically, this could all have been a pipe dream, and nothing would have come of it until Peter Jackson heard about the interview. As it turns out the Academy Award winning director is perhaps not unsurprisingly a Doctor Who fan. In fact, Jackson and Matt Smith had the good fortune to run into each other at Comic Con in San Diego this year forming something of a mutual adoration society. Today, upon hearing of the interview, Jackson commented, “I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt’s fantastic. Just name a time and place, and I’ll be there!”
So, given that Doctor Who has come to the U.S.A. twice in two years, and that the show is getting more and more popular thereby presumably earning more money via product tie-ins, is it unreasonable to think that money for a New Zealand filming is within the realm of the possible? Especially since the 50th anniversary looms on the horizon, there is a growing sentiment that Doctor Who has to forge new territory and be bigger than ever before.
Do you think Peter Jackson would be an asset to the Doctor Who arsenal? Would you like to see Doctor Who come to New Zealand to film?
