The Nintendo-funded Project Sora, developer of the recent Kid Icarus Uprising title for 3DS, has recently been dissolved. The group was formed in 2009, helmed by Masahiro Sakurai, creator of the Super Smash Bros. series.
The reason for the disbandment is currently unknown, with a single statement released on their website, saying:
“The Company was dissolved on 30 June 2012. Thank you very much for your patronage so far, this website will be closed as of July 31, 2012.”
Nintendo had previously held a 72 percent stake in the firm. It should be noted that Sakurai’s independent group, Sora Ltd, was unaffected.
Project Sora was reportedly working on the next installment in the Super Smash Bros. series for Wii U and 3DS, alongside Sora Ltd and Namco Bandai. It is unknown if certain employees from Project Sora are still working on the title.
Project Sora had only released one title in its short life, Kid Icarus Uprising. Many fans were hoping for a sequel, due to its success, but it seems they’ll be waiting another 25 years for a new Kid Icarus.
