Looks like Nicolas Cage won’t be playing Joe Exotic after all.
According to Variety, Nicolas Cage will no longer strain Amazon’s upcoming Tiger King series.
The series, which was greenlit by the streamer following the popularity of Netflix’s docuseries of the same name, would have found Cage playing eccentric big cat fan, Joe Exotic.
Set to be based on a Texas Monthly article by Leif Reigstad, Amazon’s forthcoming series was first announced to be in development in May of 2020.
Speaking to Variety, Cage revealed that Amazon has chosen to shelve its Tiger King series for the time being given that the subject matter doesn’t seem to be as relevant as it once was.

“I read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it come together,” Nicolas Cage told the outlet. “They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.”
While it seems like Amazon may never move forward with its proposed series, the streamer isn’t the only studio that was looking to take inspiration from the hit Netflix docuseries.
Still in development is yet another Tiger King series over at Peacock, which will find Saturday Night Live vet Kate McKinnon starring as Joe Exotic’s adversary and fellow big cat fan, Carole Baskin.
