Dancing With the Stars has found its new host in Tyra Banks.
On Monday night, DWTS fans were thrown for a loop when it was announced that longtime host, Tom Bergeron, would be departing the series after 28 seasons.
The decision to part ways with Bergeron comes as the network opts to take the hit dancing competition series in a different direction. So who will be on hand to usher the change along and fill Bergeron’s shoes? It turns out, it’s none other than Tyra Banks.
Word that Tyra Banks would be joining the Dancing With the Stars family as the show’s new host broke late Tuesday (July 16) night— just 24-hours after Bergeron’s departure was announced.
In a statement sharing the good news, Banks spoke of why she’s so excited to pick up the mantle.
“I’ve been a fan of DWTS since its beginning,” said Banks, who in addition to hosting, will also serve as an executive producer on the series. “The fun mixed with raw emotion, seeing celebrities push past their comfort zones, the sizzling dance performances…it’s always transported me to my days of turning it up 10 notches on the catwalk.”
Banks also paid tribute to Bergeron’s many years as host saying, “Tom as set a powerful stage, and I’m excited to continue the legacy and put on my executive producer and hosting hats.”
Meanwhile, Karen Burke (president of ABC Entertainment) chimed in on the addition of Banks for the series’ 29th season in a statement released on Wednesday (July 16).
“As we gear up for the show’s 29th season, we can’t wait to welcome Tyra Banks to our Dancing stage,” said Burke according to Variety. “Tyra is an award-winning multi hyphenate whose fierce female prowess and influence across many industries have made an indelible mark. Her fresh take on America’s favorite dancing competition will surely bring more than a ‘Smile’ to fans everywhere.”
Currently, there’s no word of when we can expect Dancing With the Stars to return for season 29.
