Princess Bride is one of those timeless, iconic movies. So when reports surfaced that a remake was being discussed, people got angry.
It is all about reboots and remakes these days. We’re a culture lowkey obsessed with nostalgia, and there’s some seriously easy money for movie studios to take us all back to the stories that were key in our formative years. But sometimes movie studios can get too eager to cash in on this nostalgia wave and risk ruining something that was perfect.
When Variety released a statement given in an article about Norman Lear that, “very famous people…want to redo The Princess Bride,” the internet had a collective meltdown.
The first reason fans balked at the article was because the article was tweeted out calling The Princess Bride “Norman Lear’s The Princess Bride.”

And yes, Lear did indeed produce the film, but the two most associated with the film are the writer of the novel and screenplay, William Goldman and the movie’s director, Rob Reiner. Even though Variety would have no part in making the movie a reality, the fact that they seemed to miss two of the key individuals largely responsible for making the 1987 film what it was made fans feel a bit panicked that not only was an unwanted remake coming, but it would miss all of the elements that made it great.
Carey Elwes, Westley himself, even tweeted about the remake. In his delightfully perfect fashion, he expressed his distaste for the idea, channeling Westley as only he could.
There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one. https://t.co/5N8Q3P2e5G

The Variety article doesn’t name the individuals interested in remaking The Princess Bride, and we are pretty sure their anonymity will forever remain intact given the intense fan backlash to the mere idea.
While it can be really fun to see updated takes on classic movies and television shows, some things are perfect just as they are. Hopefully, the outcry from fans based on that one statement has made it pretty clear to movie studio execs that we think a Princess Bride remake isn’t just a bad idea — indeed, it is, say it with me, inconceivable.
