Gillian Anderson has officially boarded The Crown season 4. The beloved actress will play less-than-beloved politician Margaret Thatcher.
Gillian Anderson is beloved by so many of us. She won our hearts as Dana Scully, and her roles after that have only solidified her place as a sterling actor and all-around awesome human. However, her latest role for The Crown has fans feeling conflicted.
Anderson has officially signed on to star in The Crown season 4 as Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher is a highly controversial politician and was the longest-serving Prime Minister in Britain to date. Her intense devotion to her beliefs and policies, known as Thatcherisms, earned her nicknames from Iron Lady to Attila the Hen.
So learning that Gillian Anderson will be bringing her to life has got fans feeling conflicted, especially in our current political climate. Anderson released a statement about the casting, and Netflix shared it on their official social media channels.

Anderson said, “I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman. Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable, but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface, and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.”
While Gillian Anderson fans have largely agreed that she will absolutely rock the role, many have expressed concerns surrounding Anderson’s choice of words. Claiming people will “fall in love” with Thatcher is a dangerous thing in our current political climate.
It will be interesting to see if The Crown and Gillian Anderson will portray Margaret Thatcher as a villain, a misunderstood politician, or something else entirely. After all, The Crown had the advantage of addressing political events that most viewers were either not alive to witness or were too young to recall, but as they enter the modern era, this struggle between portraying the monarchy and British politicians accurately while also weighing public opinion will only become more challenging.
Either way, we’re excited to see Gillian Anderson join the team at The Crown. Season 4 is currently in production, and season 3 is set to air on Netflix on November 17.
