Here’s where to find Marie Lu on her Rebel tour, as she returns to the world of the Legend series.
Almost a decade after she became one of the best-known names in Young Adult fiction, Lu revisits Day and June’s dystopian world in her new novel, Rebel. This time, the focus rests on Eden, Day’s (now called Daniel) younger brother.
Ten years after the events of the trilogy-concluding Champion, Eden is eager to free himself from Daniel’s overwhelming shadow. But the now-reclusive Daniel is desperate to keep Eden safe, and sinister forces infiltrate the misunderstandings grown from their differences. As Eden rapidly slides toward trouble, Daniel must call in familiar help to save his brother from himself.
According to Marie Lu, fans of Legend can expect a blend of the new and the familiar in Rebel.
“There will be a reunion between several of the main cast from the original trilogy, [and] a new threat for everyone to fight,” she tells Hypable.
That blend of old faces and new forces was true for Lu as well, as she found herself meeting her characters anew in proper adulthood.
“Revisiting Day and June after all these years was a strange and nostalgic experience,” she reflects. “They sound different now, [like] teens who’d grown up just as I had grown up in the years since I first wrote about them. Eden, who in many ways is the heart of this story, was an entirely new mind to explore, and I loved discovering how this gentle little boy I’d first created in 2009 becomes a young man.”
Lu also teases that fans can also expect her signature cocktail of pain and passion in Rebel. The story is full of “a lot of brotherly tension (and brotherly love), romance,” she says. “And,” she adds, “closure, I hope!”
