Gwyneth Paltrow has portrayed Pepper Potts in the MCU since 2008, but she announced that she’s officially retiring the character.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe first introduced us to Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts in 2008’s Iron Man, and since that time Pepper has popped up in several different films in the MCU. However, after over a decade of playing the kickass businesswoman and partner to Tony Stark, Paltrow decided it was time to say goodbye to Ms. Potts.
A story in Variety confirms that Paltrow intends to retire her run as Pepper Potts after Avengers: Endgame. Paltrow told Variety that it was simply time for her to move on, saying, “I mean, I’m a bit old to be in a suit and all that at this point. I feel very lucky that I did it, because I actually got talked into it. I was friend with [Iron Man director] Jon Favreau. It was such a wonderful experience making the first Iron Man and then to watch how important it has become to fans.”
Naturally, any MCU actor announcing their departure from the MCU raises suspicions that they won’t survive the events of Endgame. Is that true for Pepper Potts?
Obviously, Paltrow didn’t confirm or deny Pepper’s fate at the end of Endgame. However, she did tell Variety that, should the MCU ever need her, she’d always be there. “Of course, if they said, ‘Can you come back for a day?’ I will always be there if they need me.”
While we totally understand Paltrow’s choice to move on after a decade of playing a character, we can only hope her statement means that Pepper does survive Endgame. After all, a world without a Pepper Potts is a bleak one, indeed. You can see what happens to Pepper and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26.
