Shadowhunters will end with season 3 on Freeform. After what was perhaps the series’ strongest run of episodes, the decision comes down to what it always does — money.
While there are 10 more episodes of Shadowhunters to go in season 3, the network delivered some tragic news. The series that helped launch Freeform’s new slate of original programming is coming to an end.
THR reports that the Constantin Film, the producer of the series, could not come to an agreement with Netflix on their output deal. The streaming platform was a huge distribution channel for fans of the series as well as a financial support for the series.
Freeform issued the following statement:
“We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite. However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season. But as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending. The 12 episodes will air in spring 2019. We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama.”
The series has already wrapped on filming for season 3, but as the statement mentions, the cast and crew will return to film a two-hour series finale. This pushes the season from a summer premiere to the network’s 2019 slate with 12 episodes instead of the original promised 10.
Freeform recently cancelled its other supernatural staple, Beyond, while renewing its mermaid-driven series, Siren. Currently, the network is amping up promotion ahead of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger and the return of The Bold Type.
More to come as the stars, cast, crew, and fans react to the news.
