Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will write and produce a new Star Wars film series, because Hoth is coming.
Lucasfilm announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators and showrunners of HBO’s Game of Thrones, will tackle a new set of stories in the galaxy far, far away. Did somebody say space dragons?
The new set of films further indicates that Star Wars intends to vastly expand the reach of its stories. Benioff and Weiss’s movies will not be associated with the Skywalker Saga films, or Rian Johnson’s forthcoming trilogy, about which very little is known.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy calls Benioff and Weiss, who famously adapted George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, “some of the best storytellers working today.”
“Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
It remains to be seen how David Benioff and Dan Weiss’s established aesthetic — which delights in HBO-friendly gore, nudity, and violence — will jive with the emphatically PG-13 atmosphere of Star Wars.
For their part, Benioff and Weiss seem quite happy about the opportunity.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” the Game of Thrones showrunners say. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
There is no word on whether Benioff and Weiss’s new Star Wars films will impact production on their controversial planned series Confederate, or whether or not Kathleen Kennedy ever intends to hire someone who isn’t a white man to write a Star Wars movie.
