Black Mirror fans are loving season 4 episode “U.S.S. Callister,” and now the episode’s director, Toby Haynes, has explained the episode’s surprising cameo. Spoilers ahead!
Sharp fans noticed a pretty fun cameo from Aaron Paul at the end of the episode as the voice of the “King of Space,” a gamer who threatens to blow up the ship carrying the newly-freed crew of the U.S.S. Callister. Haynes explained the story behind Paul’s appearance to The Hollywood Reporter.

Showrunner Charlie Brooker and Haynes debated over the accent they wanted the so-called “King of Space” to have. They needed a voice that wasn’t patronizing to gamers, but could also be a severe letdown to the crew of the Callister as their first free human interaction outside of their captor, Daly.
They needed a sort of cocky slacker, and Paul was the obvious choice for Haynes. Paul’s cameo was a ton of fun, and was kept a secret from the cast until the first screening (even Paul’s Breaking Bad co-star, Jesse Plemmons, didn’t know).
However, this is Black Mirror, so the Callister crew’s interaction with the King of Space wasn’t just a fun wink to fans.
As Haynes explained to THR, “It could be a rough life for those guys as they venture on into infinite space, one populated by gamers who just want to kill them or steal their assets. It could be quite disappointing for them, but they are free. They are free of Daly, at least.”
Sounds like the Callister crew will continue to wrestle with the concept of freedom as their adventures in space continue. Let’s hope Charlie Brooker decides to bless us all with a sequel episode soon.
