Great news, Outlander fans! It looks like we won’t have to worry about Starz pulling the plug on our favorite series any time soon!
Though the cast and crew have done a tremendous job of adapting author Diana Gabaldon’s books one season at a time, showrunner Ronald D. Moore revealed at the 2017 TCAs that they don’t envision the series reaching a Game of Thrones-like scenario.
That is to say that Moore highly doubts they’ll ever find themselves having to adapt more for television than what Gabaldon has already written.
“I cannot imagine a scenario where we catch up with Diana Gabaldon,” Moore told press in attendance at the event according to The Wrap.
And if they do reach a point where they catch up to Gabaldon at the pace they’re going? If that transpires, Moore, whose team is currently dedicating one season to each of the author’s books, promised that Gabaldon would let the creators in on “what the end of the story is.”
More importantly, it sounds as though Moore and his team are just as impassioned about bringing Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) epic love story to life as they were when they first boarded the project.
“If Starz and Sony will have us, we will absolutely keep making the show,” said executive producer Maril Davis, who was also on hand at this year’s TCAs.
Though there’s no telling just how many seasons Starz’s Outlander will span in total, it should be noted that there has been some talk of spinoffs.
Back in June of 2016, producer Matt Roberts revealed that the idea of potential Outlander spinoffs is something that comes up frequently.
“Oddly enough, we always joke about spinoffs, whether it’s Lord John or Black Jack or this person or that person because there is just so much material,” said Roberts in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Diana Gabaldon gives us so much in the books that you can probably make 10 series and the fans would watch it all.”
Before you get too excited, however, Roberts also stressed in the same interview that serious spinoff discussions are a long ways away.
“That would be something for Starz to order before we could start talking about it seriously,” continued Roberts.
For now, we’ll just have to settle for tuning into season 3 of the series when it returns in the fall.
Outlander season 3 premieres September 10 on Starz.
