If you were worried Abrams’ reboot Star Trek series would end with the trilogy, rest assured that the team behind the franchise is already thinking ahead.
Good things happen in threes, but Star Trek isn’t worried about keeping up with tradition.
Den of Geek was in attendance at the Los Angeles for Star Trek Beyond, and like all good fan-people, those in the audience wanted to know if we’d be getting another Star Trek movie even before they got to see this one. (We’re nothing if not enthusiastic creatures.)
While nothing has been strictly confirmed yet, if Abrams’ answer is anything to go by, he’s more than happy to keep producing new films in his Kelvin universe.
Speaking of the possibility, Den of Geek reports Abrams having said, “Yes, and there’s something that hopefully we’re figurative minutes away from talking about. But the answer is 100 percent yes, and it’s incredibly exciting.”
The movie doesn’t open in theatres until July 22, so the masses will have to wait a little while longer until they can figure out what happened in the film to warrant yet another story.
Luckily, early reviews of the film have been incredibly positive, with some even comparing it to The Original Series. That’s high praise, indeed.
We don’t yet know if Abrams will be returning to the franchise to direct or if he’ll only continue on as a producer. We also have to wait to find out if they’ll recast Anton Yelchin’s character Chekov following his sudden death.
