Arrow season 4, episode 11, “A.W.O.L.,” looks at Felicity’s recovery from her life-altering trauma.
Last week’s episode of Arrow, “Blood Debts,” saw Felicity spending most of the episode in surgery. Since she was receiving medical treatment, the episode looked at Oliver’s response to Felicity’s shooting. After a regression to his season 1 ways, Felicity was able to help Oliver find his way back to the bandwagon. Tonight’s episode explores how Felicity deals with her life in a wheelchair, as the damage to her spine was irreparable.
Watch a clip from the episode below:
“The wheelchair is the beginning of Felicity’s story this year, not the end of it,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells EW. “I read online people saying, ‘Oh, lighter season my ass.’ I would argue that for Arrow, this is lighter. What’s particularly lighter is Felicity’s reaction to her injury and the way she handles it.”
He adds, “Last year, there would’ve been a lot of sobbing and crying. This year, you’ll see that, in many ways, Felicity comes into her own in a much greater way than she would have had she not faced this adversity. Whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. You’re really going to see that in the upcoming episodes with Felicity.”
Last season, Felicity’s story was mostly tied up in her on-again, off-again relationship with Oliver, which was unfortunate for her character. That she is getting her own story through her reaction to her trauma is promising. Yes, it will be something for her and Oliver to deal with as a couple, but mostly it will be her story. We only hope it is handled with the sensitivity it deserves.
Meanwhile, Guggenheim also teases we’ll find out Felicity’s code name tonight. “Oracle” is off the table, however:
Tonight's new episode of Arrow includes an Internet-suggested codename for Felicity. Thanks for the great idea. @MericlesHappen

Also in tonight’s episode, we’ll see more from the Diggle brothers’ time in the military. In the last episode, there was a step forward for the two brothers, so we hope to see those fences continue to mend in the present.
